My AC will run cool, then all of a sudden just blow hot. There is a clanking sound. I determined that the AC pulley/clutch is loose and rattling. There is a plate that that is loose and clanking.
Does that mean that I need a new compressor or do I just need the ac clutch replaced? I would think that the compressor is still okay since it still blows cold.
Am I safe to drive until the weekend with the AC turned off? I won't be able to take the truck in for repair until then.
If the clutch is replaceable, how much would be a fair cost to replace something like that?
The clutch components can be replaced without replacing the whole compressor. I'd suggest replacing both the clutch hub and the clutch pulley instead of just the hub. Can't think of a reason to replace the field coil. Motorcraft parts should run you about $120 retail at O'Reilly's. A comp[lete 3-piece kit aftermarket is probably a little less, just don't install the coil unless you want it done (it has to be pressed on).
Ask your shop for an estimate of time and if you can bring the parts. Some won't, but most will allow this.
I called a couple of shops and they said that 8 out of 10 times they won't be able to replace the clutch. They said that they end up destroying the compressor trying to replace the clutch and that even if they are able to replce the clutch, its only a temporary fix. Is that the truth or a lie? My compressor was still blowing super cold, I would hate to replace something that still works and pay a big chunk of money for it.
I was told be several auto mechanics that replacing the clutch is just a band aid. They said once the clutch fails, its a matter of time before the compressor fails. They said replacing the clutch may leave leaks, etc.
So I ended up replacing the whole compressor. Was I a sucker?

Thanks.
Hmmm....Trying to find a diplomatic way of saying this......
Probably.
Of course, they managed to get you to pay $700 instead of $250 or less... The clutch is NOT part of the sealed system. If you stop an think about it, it's only a matter of time before a brand new vehicle has a failure once you've bought it..

A couple of shops said that they cant replace the clutch, but be prepared to pay for a new compressor because 8 out of 10 times they will destroy the seal of the compressor while trying to remove the clutch.
