Hey all, i ive got a 93 f250 xl and have come to conclusion the owner before me had no clue how to take care of an engine. Ive been wanting to get a new block or crate engine to put in but everyone has performance ones pushing way over what i need this farm truck to do. Anyone got an idea where i can get either an engine with the bottom end already done or a full stock crate engine without braking the bank?
check out Jasper Engines. never used them personally but they have been around for years. see if they have a distributor in your area.
check out some local engine rebuilders in your area, see what they can offer. might also check your local Ford dealer to see what they can offer, but the 460 has been out of production for awhile, so they might not have any stock crate engines left, but might know where to get one. they were used a lot in the industrial industry as gen set and standby engines and in the marine market so might also check out people who deal in industrial engines and marine market in your area.
Thanks, ill start looking around, im comfortable with doing from heads up as i have done it before just havemt had to mess with bottom end work thats one of the only reasons i have considered a crate engine just need to see if i could get a machine shop to put the bottom end together then i just do top end and all bells and whistles
I wouldn't buy eBay unless you want to tear it down and check every thing before you install. Cousin did that once got a 300 six reman off eBay installed and it smoked like a freight train. Pulled it apart it was a .030 over bore the problem was they put standard rings on .030 Pistons. Jasper is notorious for patching a motor (maybe one piston) not rebuilding it.
I tend to not make recommendations; I would check customer reviews on local engine rebuild shops and inquire. Having said that, purchased a created long block from S&S engine, out of Spokane Washington. The warranty was of particular interest, majority of the local rebuild shops did not offer extended coverage. Chose S & S over some of the other options because of the 70K, or 7 year warranty. I installed the engine myself, whether there are disclaimer for a 'do it yourself'; if decide to consider going this route suggest contact to inquire.
Purchased the engine and delivered to my door for around $1700, this was 8 years ago and the engines still doing fine. I called them in advance and specified I did not want an engine with more than a bore X K over, plus I asked them to install a mild cam since I was going to upgrade the carburetor. Found customer support helpful. An issue to consider, I was able to narrow the range of years I preferred the engine was manufactured but unable to specify a particular year.
Again, suggest do the research, particularly customer reviews regardless of which route one takes.
I had to replace the 460 in my RV 2 years ago. After a considerable search, I went with Promar Engines. They offered a completely remanufactured long block including new camshaft, lifters, pushrods, oil pump, pistons, piston rings, connecting rod bearings, main bearings, cam bearings, timing chain and timing gears, reconditioned cylinder heads and gaskets. Their price was just under $2,200 including shipping. They required a core return and shipping for that was included as well. I opted for a RV camshaft as well for an additional $120, that included the appropriate lifters as well. The engine has performed flawlessly and the as delivered condition was everything they represented. The only modification to the block I made was to change the cam timing to 2 degrees advanced from 8 retarded as delivered. 3 year unlimited mileage warranty with available extended warranty to 5 years.
Just another vote to stay away from Jasper...back when I was working as a mechanic they sent me a short block with 13 welds between the cylinders...no way I was going to install that in anyone's ride!
You can always take your short block to a local machine shop and most of them will be willing to assemble it for you.
