Has anyone here ever used an engine stand comfortably given the length of an inline? I've heard stories about too much weight being out front and the whole thing tipping over. I'm in the market for a stand and would like to avoid such stories.
I had heard this too but decided to try it anyway.
My brother had one for his engine that he got at Harbor Freight and I had mine on it for over a month and never had any issues. It tipped down a little at the end but not much else.
I converted my three-wheel stands over to four-wheelers and now I feel more secure that it wont break my toe when I torque stuff on the short block. Yes, I've had 3-wheelers get tippy on me. I also raised them up to meet my height, making the tendency to tip even greater.
This is a vary cheap Auto Zone 3 wheel stand
I used it because it was together and empty, I have 2-1200# 4 wheel stands that are apart still from my move 2 years ago.
Anyway I was only de-greasing, changing out oil pan/lifter cover & rocker cover gaskets all with out turning the motor upside down as I don't trust this 3 wheel to do that.
It was bought to do the same thing to this motor. I found it was so cheap you could not line the fingers up to center the motor to turn it over.
I say if you plan on using it over time and turning the motor upside down spend the $$ for a 4 wheel 1200# unit.
One of mine Was like new used off CL.

The power nation TV guys built their 300 on a table saying it could "bow and mess up clearances". I just built mine on a clean rolling shop cart so I didn't have to worry, it was easy enough to move and flip over I won't buy an engine stand for an inline 6. My 0.02$.
