The little square unit that screws on the side of the distributor can also go bad.
The one we had would quit anywhere but if I took a screwdriver and whack it the van would restart.
It had something to do with it heating up.
I have actually had this problem twice, about 4 years apart. The first time it was the "little square unit" on the distributor, the Ignition Module. There was a recall from Ford on these and they will replace it if there is less than 100,000 miles on the car.
The second time I had to replace the ECM. More expensive part but it did cure the problem. This time the engine would quit while driving. Most times I was able to restart it without actually stopping the van, put it in neutral and crank it right back up. Eventually it would require that it sit for several hours and then when it did start back up it only ran for a few minutes and quit again.
Sounds like a fuel problem either filter or weak pump.Pull fuel line off the front of the filter(motorside) turn key to see if pump is pumping .if that dont do it check for spark at the ignition wires (spark plugs, coil, ETC)
