Lights quit working / light switch gets really hot

My 71 highboy taillights quit working and the light switch on dash gets really hot is this a bad switch?

Could be. Check for a short.

Is it just the tail lights? Or all marker lights?

Also anything else not working? Dome light at the switch. Dash lights? Switch feel loose when you pull the **** out?

2X. I think it is either a bad switch or someone hacked in to the wiring leading to the switch to also power something else. In the schematic above, the wire connecting to the H/L switch marked circuit "25" is a 12V constant power source. So you need to check the wiring. If everything is OK then change the switch. You don't want this problem to shoot your truck up in flames.

Centech uses Ford-specific plugs and such.

Ron Francis Wiring is also Fordish.

Painless and American Autowire are more GM-oriented but usable.

I wired two vehicles using Painless. The kits are pricey and you have to know how to read a meter but they work. They make kits for however many circuits you need. Twenty-four will work for your truck.

They are not painless.

Lights

I had the same problem with my 70 Short bed, while the switch is more than likely the problem, mine was the hi-beam switch. I swapped it out and everything worked.

Also, check out ebay for a harness. I didn't have the cash to install a new harness, so I looked at eBay and found a mint harness for $100, no splices and it's in great shape.
