Considering possibly using my Excursion for an Overland build.
Looking at different wheels, roof rack and bumpers with a winch.
Needing some interior storage mods as well.
Any tips or some builds for inspiration?
In all seriousness, there's a ton of roof rack threads on here. One member threw an ARB fridge in between his rear Lincoln Navigator bucket seat swap and somehow carries a 37" tire in the stock location. Check out some threads by pirate4x4_camo via the Advanced Search.
Also run a search for bug-out vehicle or SHTF build. We have a thread somewhere here which has people's build wish lists for an escape/survival vehicle and most of those criteria work just as well for an overlander.

I've got on overland build going myself, about 50% done, here are my mods probably in order of importance:
6" lift - zone kit
37" wheels, I went with military recycle, so 16.5 rims
Roof racks were tough, I couldn't find one to fit my x so I had one fabricated and powder coated
After that you NEED a gear ratio swap, I went with 4:30s, Yukon
Then I had a swing away rear section fabricated with storage
what's left:
lights, electricity, interior, storage
Almost forgot this mod
if you are going to sleep/camp in the X long term, you really need good ventilation, I went with the Fantastic Fan and it makes a huge difference:

How did you balance the Hummer Take offs? I'm going back to H1 24 bolt even spaced wheels, running the Baja T/A's. I have 3" wheel adapter/ spacers I had Wheel Sport Tech build that are Hub Centric.
I am also doing an overland build, here are a couple of good links - one for a swing away tire carrier and one for storage drawers. The storage drawers are made for a JK however they are perfect fit for an Excursion, you can even fit them in with third seat and the factory tie downs fit their application. They are the most reasonably price units I could find. I have one stacked on top of another which leaves room on the side for a fridge. The tire carrier mounts to the hitch and still allows you to tow. It also has jerry can and Hi lift jack options. It was also much less expensive than buying a new bumper with a swing away and better than pulling a spare off a roof rack.
