What size bolts to pull steering wheel?

I have a 77 column in my 68 and I want to pull the steering wheel. Those two threaded holes look like fine thread. I tried a 5/16 fine bolt with my fingers but only get 1/2 a thread in each hole before it stops. I didn't want to force it with a wrench without checking the proper size. Anyone know?

.

Ya, 5/16 fine thread. I was just being a chicken s*^t. The threads were a bit dirty/rusty but they went in with the wrench.

I did the wiggle method and got mine off. Here's how it turned out.

It never hurts to double check. I use to be much more impatient then I am now. I learned the hard way not to force fasteners. Breaking things...cross threading things...stripping things... All makes simple jobs so much worse. Now I generally stop and think about what I'm doing or do just like you did and seek out more information. I recently disconnect my tie rods/drag link. Rather then beating the hell out of the bolt I decided to read about it here. I learned that you just beat the side of the joint with a good size hammer and like magic it pops out. I really appreciate this forum for the wealth of knowledge shared.

Nice steering wheel I've got my eye on one really similar. I dig the spokes. Seems "just right"

Did it add a lot of length to the steering column????

I almost got that same one. I just couldn't do it cause the wood looks great but wouldn't fit with my truck. I'm gonna ditch the chrome look and go black for the grill and side trim and getting some off road bumpers from jbg so the fact that it was chrome-less sold me. The black just looks great.
