Hi there i took my 79 through a puddle the other day and hit some bumps. When i started to drive away my lights went dim then my parking/interior lights would go out. they continue to flicker but still nothing, I also have no parking lights. But still have blinkers, headlights and brake lights. I replaced the headlight switch and some fuses but its still doing the same thing. anyone have any suggestions? I'm am so confused right now.
Thank you, i"ll have to check to check the grounds tomorrow but the fuses all check out but the instrument panel it only shows four volts when it flickers. Do you know where that grounds ive checked the radiator support and the taillights and they're still good.
I would check all your grounds in all your light circuits - front, rear, and dash, make sure they are all clean and shiny. Check your sockets, too - I had a nagging issue at the back when I replaced a FRONT socket which had an intermittent ground. You can also pull your dash (carefully, and be aware part of it could frag and cost you $65 to replace) and carefully clean all your socket contacts on the dash. Test the bulbs to make sure none have burned out. I have not looked carefully at the headlight switches but there is a spray contact cleaner which does a good job of cleaning switch internals... costs less than $10 a can at places like Ace or Home Depot and may be worth trying. Don't forget to check your dimmer switch, too. And at every electrical plug, tighten up the contacts. Check with a multimeter for voltage drops. If you are lucky, the problem will persist long enough to find the cause, intermittent problems are the bane of existence - they always go away when you look for the root cause.
If, after all that, you still have a problem you are going to have to a) do some rewiring or b) replace the radiator cap by removing the old one and driving another truck underneath it.
