Hey guys, First time posting a question here. I just bought a 2001 F350 Lariat crew cab dually and the key fob won't unlock the doors. I replaced the battery and no joy so I took it in to my mechanic and he says all of the actuators need to be replaced. I've always trusted this guy but I can't afford to have them all replaced now and I wanted to do a little research. Has anyone here ever experienced or heard of them all going out at the same time? I mean seriously, all 4? And is there anything else that could be the problem? Thanks in advance.
Do the locks actuators work when you press any of the lock or unlock door buttons? It not, check the fuses as mentioned above. If no owners manual, go here...
Just Strokin, I was just thinking about the fact that they do lock and unlock with the door buttons last night. They are electronic so if the actuators were all bad why would they work with the button. Sounds more like a fob issue or is there a relay of some kind? I'll try reprograming the fob today. Thanks.
Also, remember if it's a thermistor problem, the actuators will many times work when it's cold, such as you stated "last night."
I agree though, that all four usually won't all go bad together, so more then likely a key fob issue.
Ok, I must be going a little senile. I was only hearing the actuators clicking when I push the button. The new one works with the button (not the fob) the other three do not work. Tried reprogramming the fob (no joy). My mechanic only charged $160 for driver door which is much better than the dealer but dang, that's still a big expense. We're headed camping so I'll deal with it when we get back. Thanks for the advice.
When you tried programming the fob.....did the doors go through a lock and unlock cycle after the 8th time of turn the key from off to on?.....did you leave the key in the on position on the 8th cycle?
Go here and see the build for your truck to make sure it came with Remote Keyless Entry or Frequency - 315MHZ...click on the Vehicle tab and enter the VIN...
Just Strokin, Thanks for checking back. I'm pretty sure I forgot to leave the key in the on position until it cycled through. I tried again and it worked this time. I'll still have to fix the other 3 actuators but it's a start. Thanks for the help.
When you push the driver door lock button, does it lock and unlock all 4 doors? If the answer is yes, the actuators in the doors are ok. To unlock the doors with a Ford fob, you must press the "Unlock button" twice (2 times). The first push unlocks the driver door and the second push unlocks the other doors. It must be pushed twice within like 2 or 3 seconds.
Does the Ford fob lock all the doors when the lock button is pressed? Again, if it does, the actuators are all ok.
Interesting, in that on my 2002 F-250 the driver door lock actuator worked, but not the passenger. Dealer charged $60 Diagnostic Fee and determined driver side door lock actuator only working intermittently. Said both need to be replaced.
