Good day, I have a 98 explorer Eddie Bauer. I bought 2 key fobs and followed the instructions for programing them. I got the confirmation on the locks cycling. The fobs will arm the anti theft and will un-lock the doors but will NOT lock the doors. I've done the programing several times with the same results. Is there something else I can try before going to a dealer? Thanks in advance for any advice and assistance.
Do you have any original fobs, or are the only fobs you're using the new ones you just programmed? Since they programmed and work for unlocking the doors, I don't think the issue is the fobs, the programming routine, or the security module. I suspect the issue is with the wiring to the power locks.
Have you tried locking the doors with the passenger side switch when the doors are closed, engine off, and windows up, such as the state of the vehicle when you are trying to lock it up with the fobs to see if that works? I suspect Lock won't work from the door switch with everything closed up either. But if the lock button on the door works sometimes, there's a pretty good chance the issue with with the wiring in the accordion boot between the driver's door and the cab. That's a pretty typical issue.
The only fobs i have are the 2 new ones. Both lock switches on the truck work with no issues. The keypad on the outside of the drivers door also unlocks the doors. I have noticed it won't lock the doors either. I know if you press the last 2 or first 2 (can't remember off the top of my head) buttons simultaneously they should lock the doors.
I have a perplexing problem with a new key fob for my 2011 F150. I successfully programed it, and everything remote works...the door locks, remote start, alarm (honking), but when I put the key in the ignition, and turn it to the on position, it kills the engine and I see the message "engine start fault". It seems like I have tried everything, so I wonder if anyone else has seen anything like that.
Seems like these fob's are a kind of half baked technology...
The remote keyless entry function is different from the transponder portion. It sounds like you were successful in programming the remote functions of the fob, but did not successfully program the transponder to the anti-theft system. It sounds to me like the key is working exactly as designed.
To program the transponder you'll need two keys (or more) that are already programmed to the vehicle. If you don't have that, you'll need to visit a locksmith, dealership, or find someone with a professional scan tool capable of accessing the immobilization function of the vehicle.
