You've identified a part that's failed, the axle shaft u-joint. Fix the known problem, inspecting all the components you encounter while doing so, and reevaluate.
Did your truck fight the steering wheel going strait down the road or just in the corner with that u joint when it went bad on your truck. I'm going to fix the u joints I'm just waiting for parts I was going to tighten up the steering box just to try it but it feels like it has no slack in the steering so I don't really want to mess it up.
If you have a 4 wheel drive, do you still have the tow hooks from the factory mounted up front?
The bolts that hold those tow hooks also help bolt in the front of the leaf spring hanger. I've seen those removed before and when the bolts are left out, the springs move around and cause wandering steering.
Wow, I never thought about that. Good info Chris. I don't have mine removed, but I have seen some trucks with those removed. I'll have to get under there and see how this all ties in. Thank pal.
I am interested in this as well. My Western Ultra-Mount plow mount had me remove 2 of the 4 bolts on each side. I have since had new front springs (leveling kit) put on, and haven't had any issues with them moving around. I need to get under there and look around...
It was the axle U joints when I pulled the passenger side out it was froze pretty good did both sides only took about 2 hrs. The power steering pump needed changed also 250k on both so they lasted a good while. eBay has a good deal on spicer joints with both seals if anyone needs to do theirs.
