Play in steering
I have a 1990 F-250 that has alot of play in the steering. It turns both directions fine, but when you're going straight you can turn the steering wheel a few inches in either direction before the weels actually start turning. The power steering pump has some whine to it, so i will most likely just end up replacing it, but i dont think that will solve the steering issue. Is there some sort of adjustment on the steering gear to tighten things up, or do you think the joints or connections on the steering shaft are at fault? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

i'd check the steering linkages and ball joints first, since it can be done visually. all you need is a partner you trust to sit behind the steering wheel to turn it while you check em out.
also you can do a visual check of the steering shaft rag and pot joints. might as well make sure the steering box is secured to the frame rail. once all that's been checked out, that's when i'd check the meshload and adjust it if necessary. if it checks out, then and only then would i consider a new or rebuilt box.
i agree that a new pump will not solve loose steering.
