have not seen any lately... there were units back in the 1960-70 that were bolt on units. Compressor mounted to engine.... two hoses and wire run to under dash area... coil and blower mounted under the dash and hung down a few inches.
If you want the factory look, you will have to mount the coil inside the air duct and use the same blower motor. Then you need a dash **** to select operation.
I know that dealers installed AC on some pu's up till 91ish. Just not sure about later pu's. Really not looking for vintage air or a under dash set up. I was just curious if finding a parts pu with dealer installed air was possible. I would like it to look like it belongs.
I don't think "dealer installed" is an option... If they wanted AC, they ordered it from the factory........ removing the dash to get to the air duct is not an easy job... and that is the easy part of an AC installation.. be prepared for several days of work and lots of $$.
Would be easier, quicker and possibly cheaper to find a whole cab from a wrecked truck. Tear the donor apart first to see what you're getting into. Or go to a Pull a Part yard and practice on a truck in there.
Anyone ever install a/c in a non AC equipped pu. Pu in question is a 99 f150 4.2 5 SPD. 4x4. Were some pu dealer installed air?
Yes when I was at Ford I did a number of retro installations of ac units in non ac vehicles . It comes from Ford (in a kit) and can be installed in a days time.
You can also find a donor vehicle (s) and do a transplant as well . I've also done that too . It's not hard I've also done it on other than Ford vehicles too. It's a lot of work but
Thanks TruckinAL. I think I will try to find another 99 F150. I'm thinking I can purchase one at salvage value, $200 or so. Will for sure pay for a new receiver dryer, possible a compressor. How much of the dash would I need to change. It appears to me just the controls, evaporator housing & some duct work under the dash. Thanks again.
Well you will have to change out the heaterbox and the dash will pretty much stay the same except the controls as you mentioned . You will use the same upper duct work everything else will come with the heaterbox. . Make sure you use all new seals and lube them with Pag 46 refrigerant oil
