1997 e4od install issues

I just put a 1997 7.3 e4od tranny into my 1990 super duty with around 15-16 quarts of fluid. But was wonder if it was normal for it to almost kill the motor while in drive and reverse and make a rattle from the tranny after I go back to park.
Would it be not enough fluid is inside to converter yet?
The tranny is a Ford reman that was removed since the motor went out after the tranny install.

No, that is not normal. The 1997 E4OD would have a different solenoid connector, did you swap in your 1990 solenoid pack?

Yea, I swapped mine into it and also changed the shifter linkage on the tranny with my old one.

Did it bind up when bolting together? I believe you could have a problem if the input shafts got swapped around. There are two different lengths that I know of, but I am not sure you could even get the converter seated if the shaft was too long. Just my guess.

The tranny went in and lined up perfectly. I used a '97 torque converter that matched what my '90 would also accept.

The only thing I can think of, is that the PSD torque converter has more "grab", and the IDI can't compensate well for that.

I checked the torque converter again and it fits my '90 super duty as well as a '97 super duty, even though it is a power stroke motor.

I do notice that while in drive gears I can't get the throttle to work as drive only moves in a creep speed, 2 ,1 and reverse are alot faster.

Also, I checked the dipstick and it still isn't showing fluid yet after 17 quarts. Does a empty tranny and TC take that much?

1987-1997 f-super duty - aka f450 trucks;

even though it's a 2wd truck,it's a 4wd trans.they hold more than you put in.the dipstick never lies.

you can't use a 6 stud psd converter.you need to use your original idi flexplate for proper engine balance and you need to use the 4 stud idi diesel converter to match it.

It sounds like your transmission is defaulting to 4th gear. Are you sure the solenoid pack has been mounted correctly, and is plugged in?

I was thinking that maybe to solenoid pack could be bad, even though it can out of a good core tranny from a 460.
I did post the numbers from it in another thread.

And I did use the original flywheel and a 4 stud converter.
I may add some more fluid to it in the morning. Worst I may have to do i drain some out.

Well you said you used the powerstroke converter? The PSD uses a 6 stud converter.

Here is a link to the torque converter that I installed. As no tranny shops would sell just a converter in my area and everyone online was ridiculous on there prices.

I still don't really have a working throttle at all in gears except reverse for some reason. And when I first start it, I have to rev the motor up to get it to start moving into gear. I did add one extra quart of fluid while the motor was running in park to get it in the cross hatches.

It sounds to me like you messed something up when changing the solenoid pack, or the transmission is bad.

You verified the electrical connections, right? What was your old transmission doing?
