My old tranny would never downshift, of light always flashed, had to start in 2nd all the time, and reverse finally went out.
I'm not sure how the solenoid pack could have been put in wrong, but I used my old one( as It came out of a good tranny unit) and I checked that it was plugged in.

Would the computer on the truck maybe bad?

When you put the trans in with the new converter how much fluid did you put in it?

Mark, I put in 1 quart as I read up that the tranny will fill the converter. Plus iI didn't want to spill any on myself while installing the converter into the tranny.

So you put a dry converter in the trans (and that's the correct way to do it,) then after it was installed only added one quart? You're at least six quarts low, maybe seven or eight. That's why it won't work, the filter is sucking air out of the pan, not fluid.

I put 1 quart into the converter and then installed it and right now there is about 18 quarts to get it to read on the dipstick.

How long has it run? It can take a minute or two to fill the converter.

All together I've had it running for about 20-30 minutes. As I didn't want to hurt anything since it's acting up.

Mark, I also notice that my tranny code is a e, but he current converter is for a c,j,k and r. Could this be my problem? Or the stall being too high at 1950?

I don't keep track of trans codes. But I don't think any of those codes mean E4OD. If that converter is not designed for an E4OD, I think that is your problem.

Higher stall speeds means less load on the engine at idle, not more load.

Mark, if you want I can email you a video of the sound it makes underneath and the dying it does if that would help.

Thanks, but it won't help. I have a perfect record in diagnosing noises from a recording. I've never been able to do it.

You might want to investigate if that is the right converter for the transmission.

so your truck's engine is a 460 engine that your trying to mate a diesel e4od up to?

do you understand the idi and psd engines are not ford engines but navistar engines and that they do not share the same bell housings pattern of the 460?

so thus far we know;
you have a f450 460 gas truck.
a psd diesel e4od transmission. - is it a 2wd or 4wd version?
who knows what torque converter.

correct whatever is wrong,if anything.

The tranny is a rebuilt one from Ford( for a '97 f350 power stroke that was ordered and never paid for), torque converter is a new on that is for the idi or power stroke with a 4 bolt pattern.(I posted the listing of the one I have.

The symptoms are right for the torque converter locking up when going in gear. I have seen this before. It can be the solenoid pack. But it can be the pump bushing clearance is excessive to the the torque converter.

How would I tell if the pump bushings or the solenoid pack be causing the TC to lock up?
