Recently bought a 95 f-250 with the E40D transmission. I had no problems with it but the fluid looked a little dirty and had a slight burnt smell so I decided to drop the pan and change the filter and drain the torque converter. I replaced 7 quarts from the pan and let the truck run for about 30 sec. then added 6 more quarts. I started it up and ran for about a minute. and shut it off. Then restarted because I wanted to shift it thru the gears to circulate the fluid. Now I have no movement in any gear and the truck shut off. Not sure what to do next. Any help appricated.
You got 18 quarts out of the trans just from dropping the pan? That sounds like how much it would take after a rebuild. How much fluid is on the dipstick? To me, it sounds way overfilled.
The filter may not be in place. Or you just may not have idled it long enough to fill the torque converter. It should take 2-3 minutes to fill the converter. If the converter is very low you won't have engagement in any gear.
