E40D transmission fluid

I have a '91 F-250 7.3 with the E40D (I think). I just drained the oil and what looks to be 2 gals came out. The book says "fill with 3 quarts, add if needed" but thats in the "universal book" with several other tranys listed.

When I drained it, first I removed the plug from the driver side of the trans case, not much came out 1/4 of a quart. The pan it's self was completely full. The parts store said there were two pans a shallow and a deep. I think mine is the deep (about 3.5-4" at the lowest point).

When I checked the fluid (warm and in park) the level was WAY over the hash marks (maybe 2-3").

Now I just got the truck and have had "spongy" response with it and odd gear changes. Would this be the culprit? ,

Did not drain the T/C, should I do that as well or do you even have to?

How much do I add back?

Could this be another transmission and I'm just not aware of it? It has "ford" on the pan and has P R N O/D 2 1 on the column. Or did someone just make a measurement mistake somewhere in the past?

I have the same truck as you and I serviced my E4OD last weekend. The deeper pan is on 4WD trucks if I recall correctly. I got about 3-3.5 gallons out of my tranny by disconnecting the cooler hose and running the engine for a minute or so. I cleaned the pan and magnet and reinstalled them with a new gasket. I put back in 9 quarts + 1/2 gallon and mine reads right about at the hash marks. I probably need another quart.

It really helps draining it with the cooler lines so you don't have a pan full of fluid to dump everywhere. If it is overfilled, you should remove some fluid or you risk blowing a seal, etc when parts start moving and heating up.

You need to drop the pan then, while it is off, fit a new filter. Then, as most of the old fluid is in the torque converter, you need to drain that as well. There should be a drain bung on the converter. A refill will take around 16qts of fresh fluid with all that done.
yes the 4x4 has a deeper pan so you need to get the correct filter.

Oh, I also replaced my filter. My fluid was in fair condition so I didn't feel the need to drain the torque converter. I also couldn't find the drain.

Thanks guys that helps. The magnet in mine was about twice as big bc of all the shavings. It looked excessive to me, but maybe just wear and tear? Also the fluid was a little dark.

My magnet had a lot of crap on it, too. Just wipe it all off and spray down the pan with brake cleaner. If your fluid has a burnt smell or is really dark, you may have some issues. Other than that, it just may not have been serviced in a while. I am planning on installing a screw-on filter to the tranny cooler lines to help keep the fluid clean.

Well it's pretty dark but still red in color. I think I may have issues with the trany but I've replaced the TPS and the Speed sensor, and after this I am going to get the codes ran to see if there is anything it can tell me. FINGERS CROSSED that this remedies the problem.
