Help I need some advice

I'm new to this forum so a newbie hello is in order. I have a 1992 f150 4x2 With a automatic transmission and a 302 v8 I am wondering if and how hard it would be to swap a 5 speed in my truck or a t 56 six speed I know that it probably would be cheaper to just buy a truck with a manual transmission but the body is almost perfect or I wouldn't consider it at all thanks

Welcome to the forum.

First things first what are your plans/goals for the truck? If you plan to use it as a truck then you are going to want skip the T56. You'll want to stick with the Mazda 5spd ( F150 ) or a ZF 5spd ( F250/F350 ) . If your truck is a driver/hot rod and you've got a big budget then the T56 is a good choice. But it's more fab work and not bolt in deal.

If you are going with a mazda or ZF 5spd. The best bet to do the swap is to pick up a complete 92-96 4.9L/5.0L or 5.8L 5spd 4x2 donor truck. You'll want one with the same cab and box configuration as your truck( for the correct driveshaft ) . having a complete donor truck will give you all the bits and pieces to do the entire swap. Otherwise there are a lot of misc. parts that will nickel and dime you to death. Having the entire truck to rob parts from saves a whole lot of time and money in the end. And as a benefit, when you are finished with the swap you can sell off the rest of the donor truck and make a chunk of your money back. I've even made cash off of doing this in the past. So all my swap parts ended up being free. But that doesn't always happen.

And if the donor was a driveable truck and you feel real ambitious. You could swap your auto parts into the donor. And have a driveable truck to resell for even more cash back.

Welcome to FTE.

The best advice here is to keep your truck OEM. Neither the Mazda nor the ZF are "sporty" shifting transmissions. Given the age of any used trans you would consider, you should go through them for bearings, synchros and shift forks.

The clutch set up on both is an internal concentric hydraulic throwout bearing. These can be difficult to make work right in a retrofit situation. (based on numerous postings here).

Your trans should be a AOD. You can beef it up a little--google it--if need be.

Since you are 4x2 you aren't trying to make rock crawler or anything, right?

Some people just prefer manual transmissions. I know I do. And "sporty" shifting has nothing to do with it. I'm collecting parts to swap a manual transmission into my 89 E350 van.

I'm not a huge fan of either 5spd's myself. But if he wants a truck 5spd those are the most popular choices.

You are not wrong, but look at what you are suggesting in your prior post:

"The best bet to do the swap is to pick up a complete 92-96 4.9L/5.0L or 5.8L 5spd 4x2 donor truck. You'll want one with the same cab and box configuration as your truck( for the correct driveshaft ) . having a complete donor truck will give you all the bits and pieces to do the entire swap."

For the same money, maybe a few dollars more, sell the current truck, buy a good truck that was manual trans to begin with.

Serving suggestion.

If you read the last part of his original post. He said he knew the best thing would be to buy a manual transmission truck. But his truck had a nice body. So I wasn't going to tell him that again. And sometimes you can't find a truck/vehicle that is equipped the way you want it, or you have an attachment to a certain vehicle. You just need to build what you want yourself. That's what I'm doing with my van.

And my suggestion was if he was going to do the swap, the complete donor truck is the best way to accomplish the swap. I've done the swap on a few different trucks. I've done it both ways ( complete donor & one piece at a time ) . So I was just sharing some advice, that I have learned the hard way.

If he has a truck he likes but wants a manual transmission. There is no reason he can't do the swap. But the swap involves a lot more parts then most people think it does. That's why it's better to have a complete donor truck.

I'm thinking of making it a 4x4 as well. I've helped my dad put a 4 speed bulldog in his 92 k2500. sorry kept telling him to buy a Ford. mostly want a manual transmission

Yes, but if you are going 4x4 also you'll need to stick with a F150 for a donor truck.
