I just picked up a 74 crew cab and was thinking about the door panels. I know the back door panels are hard to find. I was thinking about taking mine and reinforcing the back of them with fiberglass. Anyone try this yet? I just want to give it some extra strength.
As long as the mount pins are good and secure you should not have a need to reinforce. But here is and idea or 2. I overhauled these so much because they have the stainless trim piece.
Make sure your door pull straps are good and secure.
1. One reinforce the area that the mount pins go in. JB weld or your fiberglass idea?
2. Grind off just a bit of the door panel (behind the area that is covered when the arm rest and finger cup are installed), its the area that the 2 bolts hold the panel off a bit.
3. Metal tab reinforce the plastic piece that is usually attached to the metal bracket under the finger cup when installed.
4. Use the longer than the Ford ones, GM push pins. The GM ones also have more flat disk surface area.
5. Use some 2" wide velcro as a back up attachment to the long run L&R area above the finger cup and at the bottom of the panel.
It might be ugly on the back side, but they are NOT going anywhere once mounted. CC panels are hard to find for sure.
