Hi!
I am trying to repair and paint my awful Door Panels. Stripped the Panels from Trim and Armrest to fill up some old cracks and holes. What kind of Clips do you prefer for the Door Panels? Metal or plastic?
I used the GM style as they're a bit bigger and maybe not as rigid.
I heard someone say you could use a hacksaw to saw thru the plastic ones if you ever needed to remove your panel in the future. That would prevent breaking your panel.
Did you reinforce your door handle and other points with epoxy?
If you do a search you'll find some pics with some good places to reinforce.
I would NOT go back with the metal ones, great way to break the door panel mount tabs, if you do not have a door panel removal tool.
I like the GM ones because they are longer and have a bigger head surface area. And you can easily hack saw (just the hack saw blade with tape for a handle) thru them to remove the door panel to ensure you do not break the tabs.
Also behind the arm rest/finger cup area, there are 2 bolt heads that hold the metal bracket to the door. Notch the door panel (with a Dremel tool) so it will fit tighter to the door.
No worries the arm rest and finger cups cover the notches. Also upgrade to metal finger cups. And x2 on JY weld or 2 part epoxy reinforce the back side mount tabs.
Also make some thin sheet metal overlay/reinforcement pieces for the flat plastic tab that mounts to the metal bracket, under the finger cups. JB Weld it in place.
Thanks! I dont like the metal clips either. Dont understand if I have to move all
8 mountings on the backside of the Door Panel if I want to use the plastic clips?
Well it has been around since Jan 2018. Do you not check every thread for good info? Respond or not, I always read every new thread to learn as much as I can. And then sometimes I respond with some help.
To use the plastic clips I assume you have to cut slots in the mounting tabs? Mine have a through hole.
Ever door panel I have seen always had a slot, be it cut or broke from PO's. Even with door panels in the JY they always have a slot. If yours do not, then you are either going to have to use the OEM metal clips. Or use a Dremel thin cutting clade and cut a slot.

I read every one, I do not reply to every one of them because I know to stay in my lane....sometimes. Lol Guess I need to spend more time in the garage working on my Ford trucks and not so much time on FTE.
Well here’s an original with the holes mostly intact. Otherwise not very good condition, driver side probably useable, passenger pretty well destroyed.
any thought on which primer/promoter to use with sem on the new manufactured panels?
With some time, effort and some Plastic epoxy (2 part plasti-weld) and or maybe some JB plasti-weld even the worse cracks can be repaired. And add in a metal finger cup reinforcement for good measures. And get some metal finger cups also.
I have remade this one to roll around both sides now.
JB weld it to the door panel.
