Im lost....Boost pressure

I am very new to the 7.3 diesel world. I bought my first 2000 7.3 a few months back. it has a 4'' >5'' exhaust. it had a superchips and I upgraded to a DP tuner with stock, 60 tow, 60 daily, 80 daily and 100 perf. I also changed out the stock turbo to a 38R. Im only seeing 15lbs of boost at 3k. I was told I should be up around 28. I checked for leaks and couldnt detect any. any suggestions?

With a 38R, you should be seeing north of 30 PSI easily. How did you check for leaks? Did you adjust the waste gate rod?

checked for soot and ensured all of my clamps were tight. checked the tightness of all the hose clamps and placement. as for the rod. i followed the instructions and set it. i believe it was around 6 turns.

make a boost leak detector and use shop air to check for leaks. Also check your up pipes for leaks were they connect to the collector at the turbo. Leaks in up pipes will show up as soot.

Welcome to our forum!

There are actually a few possibilities here, but the boost leak detector is one of those low-cost and easy troubleshooting tasks. If you click the Custom Tunes link in my signature, you will find my take on power-up procedures. Without knowing your backpressure, we don't know if you're leaking clean or "dirty" air. Have a real good look all over the back of the engine bay and on the sides of the engine. Do you see any soot at all? If so, it doesn't belong there.

another thing to remember is boost is not determined by RPM, boost is determined by the load on the engine.
i can see 30 lbs boost, or 3 lbs boost at 3,000 rpm. depending on whether i am standing on the throttle pulling 10,000 lbs up a 12% grade, or off the throttle coasting down the opposite side of that grade.

This is a very good point to remember and one I see and had thought about very deeply after installing quite a few "cleaner and more efficient" power upgrades to my truck. When towing I typically see 18 PSI going up a hill, but going up that same hill unloaded I see 5 PSI. The one time I flogged the truck pretty hard right after installing the modifications, I put the skinny pedal to the floor a couple of times to see how she performed. Best I could tell it peaked at 28-29 PSI at the top of 3rd gear.
