EOT VS ECT Safe/Not Safe

Hi guys!

I wanted to make a kind of thread to help others as well as figure out something for myself.

Everyone always disputes the differences in temperature and what is safe can what is not.

I also wanted to include diagnosing temp issues if I can.

What does everyone think?

I see EOT at 215F daily while driving empty. I just recently installed a coolant gauge (automatic) and the highest I've seen it hit is 187F. That's a differential of 30F!

This normal to you guys?

I've had people tell me not to worry and some say "holy hell! Something is wrong!"

Some people say they don't hit 215F even when they're towing.

I assumed it was because my radiator has a lot of miles and is beat to hell so it wasn't cooling properly but I just found out it stays nice and cool so now I'm thinking plugged oil cooler? What else would need to be looked at?

I installed my temp sensor in the plug at the water pump where most install the filter system.

215 is nothing. I've datalogged quite a few 7.3L's that would get higher than that easily with absolutely nothing wrong with them. The new 6.7L will get up near 250 if you're working it. The oil can handle the temps without a problem.

Moral of the story... relax and enjoy the truck

I agree with Curtis. Nothing much to get too worried about.
ECT/EOT delta figures are helpful for engines that utilize EGR systems but since the 7.3 has no such system, it's not really something that needs much monitoring.

You may already know my stance on this - verify. I would shoot some oil stuff with an IR gun to make sure the sensor isn't on drugs or something. You know... "High".

agreed, mine likes to run a little "high" as well but its usually ok with out a single fuss and I from time to time work the truck hard as possible at times making multiple 70+ trips (one way) in a day too...

Good to know. I've heard from somewhere that temps over 250(?) will cause the oil to break down. That's what had me worried.

Good idea. It was reading higher than my coolant gauge was when everything was off. So I imagine it might be reading a little higher.

I should have guessed that! I did it for my coolant system but it didn't dawn on me to do the same for the oil .
