higher than normal coolant temp

I have been noticing higher than norm coolant temps lately 220-230. 2005 excursion with Bullet Proof Diesel remote oil cooler. Truck has been studded deleted and all upgrades including a bullet proof water pump when we did the head gaskets and studs. IPC sensor went bad early spring and the radiator seeped some fluid out at the seems but has stopped since. not sure what to think about it. I was going to replace the radiator but it isnt leaking or seeping. Not sure what to do. Fan goes on and temp drop. Not very hot here in upstate NY. Gonna be traveling south in a couple months and dont want a prob.

Have you flushed the cooling system lately?

Also have you cleaned the radiator up front ? They can pile up with dirt and bugs etc.

Also I would look at your temp sender. Do you have gauges or monitor on the truck?
Are the oil and coolant temps the same after sitting overnight ? If you have monitor those temps should be 1-2 degrees apart at the most.

My gut feeling is either a bad sensor or filthy radiator..

Good Luck on it.

I have not flushed the system lately maybe couple years ago like 20,000 miles.
Radiator is clean up front.
Use dash boss to monitor temps and have a gauge with separate sensor.
Temps are within couple degrees in the morning.
The temp sensor was replaced just before I put the BPD remote oil cooler.

Thanks

under what driving conditions are you seeing the higher coolant temps? Towing, unloaded, what are the corresponding oil temps, tranny temps and IAT2 temps?

If you capture a datalog file with the Dashboss while it is happening I can try to graph it up to get a clearer picture so the smart folks can help diagnose it.

This is happening during light towing and maybe heavy footed driving. Oil temps stay low in the 190-195. I will try to get data from dash boss but never did that befor. Not driving it much lately needs front hub and seal and was gonna do that this weekend if parts come in today. I towed a 24' car hauler with a very light car in it and coolant temps was pushing 240

Your fan should be roaring at those temps, is it? Did you do an EGR delete with the other work and do you have an EGR valve plugged in (in either case)?

high temps

my 2004 excursion temps run 192 to 205 tops whether idling or towing and this is in southern AZ where its routinely 100+ this time of the year. Bulletproof egr, studs everything else stock. The fan never comes on unless towing up a grade and kicks in then the oil temps hit 225.

egr is deleted Fan roars when on. EGR is plugged in. Have not had a problem with coolant temp till now. I'm wondering if radiator in not holding enough pressure. Would that make it hotter?

No, the pressure affects what temperature it will boil at -- you've got the radiator problem and an excessive heat problem...

I've read your post and the replies several times and in summary it appears that you had a properly running truck after all your upgrades and modifications but lately it seems to be running hot. I believe you indicated you had a newer water pump. It also appears that your oil temperature is quite a bit below your coolant temperature. You indicate the radiator is clean on the outside. Given the above, I would hypothesize that you may have a bad sensor(s) or perhaps you have a partially functioning or sticking thermostat in the closed position. Two cheap and quick things you may want to do.

1. Either replace the coolant sensor or switch that sensor with the oil temp sensor and see if this indicates a bad sensor.

2. Pull the thermostat and put it in a pot on the stove and see if it operates properly i.e. opens at 190 F.

I had something like this happen a couple years down at South Padre Island. I dialed up Rock Auto and had a new water pump and thermostat sent to me. I concluded that the water pump was OK but I decided to replace the pump since I had a new one in hand. The thermostat was really cruddy so I replaced that also. My conclusion was the thermostat was bad. Hope this helps. Write back and let us know how this turns out.

Bob's got you covered ^^^^

With your flushing history I wouldn't have internal radiator blockage at the top of the list, but thermostat hadn't been mentioned so that would be next.

I was going to ask what coolant you were running -- a wrong mix of coolants could lead to blockage...

Never thought about the thermostat. There are two sensors one the dash boss reads and one that aftermarket guage reads. Both show high temps so cant imagine that both are bad. Yes the truck has always run properly and usually never gets hot. The remote oil cooler really works well. I have a spare thermostat I will swap out. Think its a mishimoto 203 that I used to use in the winter. I will let you know thanks.

Don't know how clear a shot you can get at the radiator, but an infrared thermometer may show you a cooler spot in the radiator if there is a blockage. They are cheap.

Got to replace the thermostat yesterday with a mishimoto 203 that I have for winter. Temps hover between 203 and 208. I will get another 193 and swap it out. Thanks!
