Advice on dead engine

Have a 2003 F550 with manual Trans 4X4, 350,000km on it, engine has never been touched, ever. Last week dropped a needle bearing into pan sucked up into oil pump , boom! Now what ? Do I pull it into bush or shop? Do an engine swap, with what ? I love the truck , acts as service unit on farm.

I would say if you love the truck, and the rest of it is worth keeping you might be well served to find a used engine. Cost to replace the entire truck versus going with a used engine. One drawback is finding one you know has a good history, but they are out there.

I opted for a used 60k mile engine and had the shop "bulletproof" it. @ $12k the cost was still cheaper then buying another truck like it. then there is the question of how the previous owner took care of it. More peace of mind IMHO.

Needle bearing from a cam follower is a full tear-down.
You have to replace the cam and sadly that is the LAST
thing to come out of the block. When your that deep in
you may as well do it all. If your on a budget a good
used engine is the way to go. One thing to think about
is do you want to keep the older style or step up to the
newer engine with the cast iron HPOP. In doing that you
do have to make some changes to the harness and some
other tweaking. But it can be done. You have options at this
point in the game. So do your thinking and then make a plan.

Ask questions. Best of luck.

I've had a few guys tell me to drop a cummins in it. I'm NOT a cummins fan, if anything but a 6L goes in it a Cat would be the next choice , but that looks kinda difficult

Dropping anything into the engine bay, other than what came out will be astronomically more expensive.

Do you include the step to the newer year?

Not even thinking about other brands of engines.

Going away from the 6L would be like retreating . I always loved when people asked me if it was a 7.3, I'd answer nope a 6 with a ton of miles and never been in the shop😊.

I'm not sure I can be of much help to you, other than to remind you that manual transmission equipped trucks utilize a completely different bellhousing bolt part pattern from the automatic trucks, and therefore different rear engine cover. That said, if you do choose to go the used engine route, be prepared to have to swap out the rear cover since you will most likely have to source one that was mated to an automatic transmission. I'm not surprised at the $14000 quote. I'm assuming that is for a Ford reman?

I have a guy that I send people to and he might have some truck
6.0 engines. Most times he has van stuff because he retires older
emergency service vehicles. You could also use a E-series engine
but there is more work involved in that little swap that you may
want to get into.

His name is Jeff
His Ebay contact is vampkittykat
Here is something he has for sale. Lots of times if you don't see something just ask him if he has it in stock and he will get back to you.

6 0 6 4 Diesel Ford Glow Plug Control Module Relay DY876 DY 876 Ships Today | eBay
I have used him a few times and I know we have a few others that have also.

He may have a manual rear engine cover.

So my engine is full of filings , haven't had much luck locating a decent used engine I can trust. So as much as I didn't like idea of spending big coin on 13 yr old truck, I've decided spend once enjoy new engine and warranty and move on
