Gentlemen,
In the last couple of days my batterie light comes on after about 30 mins of steady driving. I have no starting issues as of late. Batteries have been tested under load and checked out okay. Alternator is a few months old. Other than the battery light coming on there no other
problems, yet. Is my alternator over charging? A couple of month ago my truck would shut off when I turned a/c or heater on in the mornings. My alternator was over charging. After I replaced it I had no more problems. Could any of this be related to the life time led bulbs that I'm using?
Sounds like alternator troubles to me. You didn't get it at autozoo did you? I had one of those "lifetime" alternators go bad in less than 24 hours, and then they argued with me about swapping it out again.
Sometimes an alternator will check out OK when cold, and fail under load at higher temps. Maybe that's what's going on here. If the light is illuminated, there is a problem though and needs to get fixed.
Measure voltage at battery posts in the morning at rest, at idle, at 2000 RPM with all accessories on (headlights, heater blower, radio etc) etc. If they check out OK, test again when light comes on. Let us know what you find.
Hook up a meter and check the voltage with the truck running. Should be around 14.1 volts. If it is 12.8 volts or lower your alternator is not charging your batteries. Be very careful to keep your batteries up or you will lose them while your having alternator issues.
if you got a reman from Oreillys thats the problem, return the alt and get a new one, had the same problem with my 2 alt from Oreillys that were remans
Last year I went to napa auto parts when my light came on and they had either remanufactured or brand new. Brand new was $20 more, and it's brand new! I have almost a year and about 15,000 miles so far. I try to not ever step foot in those two stores due to all the stories over the years.
check the plug going into the alternator. if it is loose, the light comes on. also if the wires are slightly burned, the light will come on when it gets hot enough to loose connection.
Same thing happened to me, after 2 alternators and 2 sets of batteries from being stranded on interstate loaded, found a fuse link wire burnt in to on passenger side fender well. Check voltage 1st with good meter at idle and about 2000 rpm. You should see 14 volts or more. If not may want to check solenoid wires on passenger fender well.
