I bought a 7.3 f250 with 300k mi. It had a battery light on but didn't show any signs of trouble. Eventually started dropping volts a few days later and I replaced the alternator. The light is still on and flickers in time with the idle of the truck and sometimes goes out when I'm on the gas pedal. Some nights when the lights are on the voltage drops ever so slowly until its drained. Any ideas on why the new alternator didn't fix the problem? NAPA's scanner says the truck has 12.4V at idle and 12.1V at idle with the lights on.
Batteries are relatively new and test fine, dual Interstate Mega-tron Plus batteries-top of the line.
Going through the same issues with mine. Reported the battery light would come on then go out periodically. Was told here by several members that the alternator was going out. So on Thursday July 2nd. Everything seemed to be working good. Drove the truck once on Friday for a few minutes then it sat until today, Tuesday July 7th. When I started the truck the battery light came on and only when the RPM's increased did the light dim, until I got to work then the light finally went out. Looks like I will be replacing at least one of my batteries. Strange how these seem to go hand in hand (alternator and battery).
Could be either batts or bad alternator. I'd definitely have them bench test all three. New alternators aren't always a slam dunk. Make sure the battery cable connections are clean.
on the alternator there is a 2 wire plug. try pushing it all the way down, or wiggling it and see if the light goes off.
the 2 wires in that plug are for the light and to energize the alternator. if the plug does not make contact, no charge and the light comes on. you can buy a replacement plug from NAPA for under $5
I went through this about 3 months ago. O'Reilly Auto Parts store checked the alternator and told me batteries, so I installed new batteries. Problem was still there. I went back to parts store and bought a new alternator. Problem gone. Lucky for me the alternator went out about 10 years ago and I had bought the lifetime replacement alternator from O'Reilly Auto Parts. They give me my money back upon return of the warranty part.
i have had this happen twice on my 02 and a few times with other trucks at work. alternator and batteries check good, but light still comes on and battery does not charge every single time i changed the plug and the problem went away. .
