I am removing the steering shaft in my 79 F250 4x4. I have the bolt out that attaches the u joint to the spline groove. Do I need to remove steering column to get U joint off spline? I did this before 20 years ago but I can't remember.

4 speed or A/T?
Be aware there is no replaceable u-joint on 1976/79 4WD's, as it's made as part of the one piece lower steering shaft and coupler assy.
3B676 in pic is the one piece lower steering shaft and coupler, Ford did not sell any individual parts for it. It's obsolete, none are available NOS and it was very expensive when available.
Same 1978/79 F250 4WD & 1979 F350 4WD (D8TZ-3B676-B). The only thing you can do is replace it with an aftermarket Borgeson shaft.
3A525 is the 'rag joint' .. was not furnished with the coupling, was available by itself.
Usually the slip joint part of the shaft will get seized up making it hard to come apart. Get yourself a new borguson shaft to replace it with. They are well built units in my experience.
