I have a 79 F250 4x4. Recently the upper u-joint on the steering shaft got sloppy. Now this truck doesn't have a rag joint , I guess it is a more heavy duty affair. Any ideas where I might find a replacement? Also fellas , I just picked up a mess of parts, mostly smaller stuff like switches, PCs valves , egr valves, even some ported vacuum switches. Also a ton of points, and 3 under hood trouble lights . Anybody need some?
Correct the 1/2 ton gets the rag joint and the F250 gets a steering shaft with a small u joint, that is not easily replaced. In fact I am pretty sure you can't replace it like a drive shaft u joint.
Thanks, I knew I would likely have to replace the entire steering shaft, but I thought what the heck , ask, you never know, eh! I am slowly working on putting an ad in the buy and sell section, I have quite a list of parts, heck I have a 5 gallon pail full of spark plugs!

There is no replaceable u-joint on 1976/79 F100/250 4WD & 1979 F350 4WD steering columns.
The lower steering shaft and coupler is a one piece assembly, Ford sold no parts for it.
1966 F100 4WD; 1967/75 F100/250 4WD steering columns have a multi-piece lower steering shaft and coupler w/a replaceable u-joint (E2HZ-3815-A replaced C6TZ-3815-A/B).
Well I never said is was made or could be replaced....It sure was not made as a one piece unit, to me anyway. Ford had to put that u joint in there sometime. So since it goes together in parts, then is can be replaced, even if ford ment for it not to be.
So I see it as it as COULD be replaced, but I would rather get a Flaming River u joint coupler and splice it into the steering shaft or just get a complete Borgeson shaft.
Yes, the U joint can be replaced as I have done it. It wasn't a piece of cake either and not like doing regular Ujoints.
I had to find an aftermaket supplier for those damn tiny U joints...took me a while. Then to get the old one off and new one on required heating/bending the yoke - swearing a lot to get the new one on, and making sure it turned true once on. Peening a slot in the new caps so they didn't move and then getting it on the steering box wasn't fun either. I can understand why Ford didn't sell parts for it as Bill stated. Too many man hours involved.
I would go with a Borgeson...which is what I did on another vehicle.

Upper pic: This u-joint (3815) is replaceable as you can see. Same 1966 F100 4WD; 1967/75 F100/250 4WD, misc C/CT & L/LN series.
Lower pic: But there's no u-joint for 1976/79 F100/250 & 1979 F350 4WD's, as the lower steering shaft & coupler is a ONE PIECE ASSEMBLY.

I just replaced the same problem in my 79 250 with the borgeson 000975 a little cutting is needed but very easy. The direction s are a little bland but just measure twice cut once. Took about an hour and half but went great and works great. The borgeson is the only replacement part out there. Shop around prices very
