I have a 79 F250 4x4 with a 300, I6, 4spd manual, no A/C, and am curious about removing the air pump/ smog pump and am just wondering what all I need to do to remove it properly. I do plan on upgrading the carb, intake, exhaust and cam in the next few months and just want to know all that needs to be done to do it. Thanks guys
I just did the same on my '79. Same truck except mine is a 2wd, but should be very similar. I got rid of the air pump, swapped to an Offenhauser C-series intake, Autolite 2bbl carb, and EFI style split exhaust manifolds.
My main motivation was getting the engine bay cleaned up and eliminating the miles of vacuum hoses that were causing numerous vaccum leaks. Getting rid of the 1bbl carb that was running like garbage was a nice plus as well.
Things I kept: PCV routed off the intake, Vacuum advance line running from carb to distributor; vacuum line for power brake booster now comes off intake.
Keep in mind I'm not subjected to emissions in MN. Don't toss the bracket that your air pump was mounted on, if I remember right it is also the mount for your alternator. I needed to trim mine to clear the Offy intake.
I still need to plumb heat into my intake to get the cold weather bogs out of it. I also need to figure out a better solution for my throttle cable as I'd like to keep a stock appearing cable (don't like locar look) but the stock cable is too short to make a smooth bend to the carb. I had to get creative here.

Wanted to mention I used a more modern throttle cable from an EFI engine and simply bolted it up to the firewall bracket. Might fit your needs?
A member on here mentioned that he did the same thing, but couldn't remember the year or engine that he robbed the cable from. Any chance you know? I'm leaning that direction right now honestly.

I grabbed a few from various EFI years, so like '97 to '96. I noticed 2 types of throttle cables which differs where it attached to the engine. Maybe go shopping at a junkyard or pick-a-part and see what you come up with?
As for OP's question, remove the smog pump, but leave the EGR intact. This would simplify your engine setup greatly, especially if it's EFI. Although I wouldn't remove it if it was EFI anyway because the computer is setup for it.
