Need advice.

Hi all, I know this has been discussed before but I prefer live conversation over searching so I'm bringing it up again. My '79 with a 300 is sitting in the garage right now with the intake and exhaust manifolds off - I was going to replace them with stock ones, but now I'm thinking that since I've got everything off anyway, what about putting on some performance parts?

I'm thinking of adding an Offy 4-barrel intake, a 4-barrel carb and a header. I'll probably go with Edelbrock. My question is, for those of you that have a setup like this, what do you think? Was it worth the money and would you recommend it?

Lastly, if I put a 4-barrel on it, what obstacles and options do I have for hooking up the throttle linkage and trans kickdown?

Lokar has the throttle cable, and I don't think you need a kickdown rod since the low rpm torque is sufficient. On my 79 Bronco, I used stock EFI manifolds from an 89 f150, and a Walker downpipe pn:45166. Slight modification was needed to make it fit. Carb choice for the Edelbrock is typically a 500. Some use Holley 390's.

The biggest problem I encountered when I installed the offy intake (offy "C") was the throttle cable mount. I used the stock cable & mount, but I had to modify the mount a little. Bolted a piece of angle iron to the intake & then bolted the throttle mount to that. Looks a bit redneck, but it works.

You must have SNAFU'd something, because the Norm is usually 25% to 50% increase in performance w/ that set-up.

Thanks guys, I've decided to do the swap for sure. The only thing I haven't picked out is the carb - I was first planning on an Edelbrock 500, which I hear a lot of people are happy with, but I've also heard a lot of people use a Holley 390. Between an Edelbrock and a Holley of the same size, I'd choose an Edelbrock simply because they're easier to tune, but I'm wondering if a 500 is too much? What do you all use and how is your gas mileage? Thanks!

Is your truck 4by? Cause Edelbrocks suck as@ on an incline, I've seen way too many stall over and over and over running performer carbs, go easy on yourself and get a holley, most of them come with ford kickdown linkage too.

The only concern I have read about the Performer is they run a bit rich out of the box...but that is what tuning kits from Edelbrock are for. None of the after market carbs we can use are application specific to our engines so some tuning will most likely be necessary. With a Holley it usually is a stiffer vac secondary spring and/or a power valve change. With the Edelbrock it may be the jet and metering rod and/or power valve spring. No big deal either way...just use whatever make you are comfortable with.
