I've read a bit on the various manual overdrive trans conversions but have not seen much on using an automatic behind the flathead. It looks like kits are available for either the Ford AOD or 700r.
Anyone with experience putting an auto trans behind a flathead in an F1?
I think several of us are using Ford 4R70W transmissions. They have the advantage over regular AODs in that they are all electronic and can be dialed in to suit your engine configuration. Since the flathead V8 runs from 65 to 600 hp you need the ability to readily change things if you make upgrades. They fit in nicely using a Bendtsen adapter kit, and a U.S. Shift Baumann Quick 4 controller kit will give you the ability to make changes if necessary. You will need to remove your current trans crossmember and either build your own or buy a replacement. CPP has one listed but it didn't look stout enough for me so I made my own. Lokar makes a nice shifter also.
Pete,
Very neat, I did not realize that it was possible to do an AOD behind the flatmotor! AOD, power steering with drag link, power brakes with stock pedal, is AC next?
The Ardun heads with a blower gave the Salt Flat racers a claimed 600 hp. Just watched AmeriCarna on Velocity that covered flathead mods done over the years. There are a couple out-takes from the show here: The Ardun Flathead | Americarna | Velocity

I thought about it, Bill, but to do that requires a total re-think of the front of the engine. And I don't have a spare set of Ardun heads lying around so even with the minor mods that I have made I'll be luck to get 200 hp out of my engine. A/C might be pushing things a bit.
