I am looking at buying a 2004 f350 with a 6.0 but I noticed that the red sticker on the engine says 2006. In assuming that means the engine has been replaced. My question is , is there a way to tell if that engine came from ford as a replacement or if it came out of another truck. My concern is that the engine may have come from another truck that was wrecked or something and now there is no way of telling how many miles are actually on it. If it is from ford then I can feel comfortable knowing it can't have more mileage than the odometer shows.
If the replacement was done by Ford it should be listed on the vehicle's OASIS report. They can easily pull up this report for you and print it out. Plus it will show all the repairs & services done by Ford.......I got one from my local Ford dealer after buying my 6.0L.
I also am not an expert. I think if it was from ford it would have been a long block and the origanal valve covers would have been reused, so it would still showed a 2004 engine. My guess it was from another truck. Most likely with less miles than what is on the truck. MOST people are not going to pull an engine to replace it with one with more miles.
It's a crapshoot do to the fact that most of the time if it came from Ford they
should of put the correct year sticker on the engine when it a full dress engine.
I would be willing to bet that you do have a 2006 engine. You may have the
better deal with the newer HPOP system pump and if it's a late 2006 you should
have 20mm dowels along with the larger water pump that went in after 2004 (?)
I think that is the change point on the water pump.
Does it feel strong and not smoke? If yes then be happy your got something good.
The only thing I would add to this is that when it comes time for repairs, the OP is sure he orders parts for the later build to avoid any delays or confusion.
Another scenario is he does have the original engine with a different valve cover. If it's a later '04, the cross breed........ he could still have wavy oil rail and old style HPOP, so ICP on valve cover.
Would have to verify by looking at the HPOP cover. Not trying to split hairs, just sayin.
Something to think about for knowledgeable 6.0 folks, maybe avoid that engine if possible when looking for something, that way you don't have the double treat of old style HPOP along with stand pipes and dummy plugs.
