Starters

I'd like to hear what anyone can tell me about these two starters. The straight one is a Mexican rebuild and I'm not finding much on the one that looks like a gear reduction unit. Both have tags but none that identify manufacturer.

Thanks,
Mark

I'm really not sure what kind of input you're looking for.

What I can say right off the cuff is that I've run some Denso-style gear reduction units (read as foreign knockoffs which were not true Denso starters), and I've not gotten more than about 18 months out of the three I've run. I've been running one genuine Denso starter now for several years with no issues whatsoever.

I'm currently running a Mistubishi inline starter (about 3 years now, three bolt connection), and it's been good to me. It will occasionally not completely engage when I flip the ignition switch, and that issue is slowly becoming more frequent (about once or twice every 3-4 weeks), but it otherwise starts well.

Tell us a little more about what you have there...

1) Are they yours, in your hands, and available for install as they are today?
2) Do they both run?
3) Have either or both been rebuilt and sitting on the shelf waiting for a home?
4) If rebuilt, were they yours prior to being rebuilt?

I have both in the garage. The inline one looks like it has been rebuilt and spins (has "rebuilt" on a tag on it), it came in the short bus. The other one I got from a friend and I have not tested it yet. Is Denso a possible manufacturer of it? And if so where would I find some identifying marks? I take it that if it's a knock off that it's not going to be good for long if it works now.

I believe what your have is a Motorcraft Reman (Motorcraft doesn't manufacture anything) and the other appears to be a Denso.

Denso is a manufacturer / rebuilder of automotive parts and its main office is in Asia. They are similar to say Dorman or Blue Point. In either case, the companies work to specifications provided by their customers.

OK, so the one is a standard starter, not a bad thing. The other one looks like a brute but that comparison to Dorman doesn't sound so good (Dorman and Horror Freight, ugh). Could a local shop rebuild it and make a good starter out of it?

Duralast starters are good quality and have lifetime warranty, I should know thats waht the fleet at work get when the oem goes bad. Only had to replace one by warranty but due to me cranking to much without letting it cool off.

The bottom photo starter looks like the type I just replaced in my truck recently.

M8T50072 Mitsubishi Gear Reduction Starter for Ford Diesel FORD TRUCKS 7.3L

All I can say is it really spins well. It's a gear reduction style.
