My first post is a question about starters. I took mine in to be tested and noticed some drag so I ordered a new one. When it came the nose looked different than the one I removed. Before I send it back I wanted to see if anyone knows whether it will fit or if I was just sent the wrong part. I guess I can't add a picture so I will try to describe the differences. The nose in my old one is round with the gear sprocket poking out. The new one the sprocket is enclosed except for one third of one side which is open. Sorry I can't describe it very well, thanks in advance for your assistance!
The 1-third-sticking-out is standard on these types.
That being said, drop it in there. If it cranks and doesn't grind, you're good.
I'm running a Cummins starter in mine(I got it for free! :P), and it's worked great for the last 4 months or so.
there are three or four design's, the one that is un shrouded is fine as long as it fits..it looks much like a PS starter just a shorter nose length..ALL types are gear reduction...some of the newer types have smaller moters that turn higer RPM the largest one I found was 4 kilowatts most are 3.4-3.6
It has been my experience that the short snout one is easierto install but the longer snout lasts longer – To me it does not matter becauseI purchased the first one from O'Rielly with a lifetime warranty and own severaltrucks . That poor starter has been changed out over a dozen times in the lastfew years J
