Last summer my starter that had been in there for a long time gave up. Recalling that I had read somewhere that the O-Reilly lifetime remans with the nose cone had been working out well for others I tracked one down. Not so easy given that they apparently put one of three different styles of starters in the same box with the same part number and which is in there is a crap shoot.
Anyway that one worked fine for a bit then started grinding on the ring gear. The starter got spinning too fast before it engaged the ring gear. This would happen almost 100% of the time for the first try of the day then about 1/3rd of the time after that.
I've replaced it now twice with warranty replacements of the same nose cone style and have had the exact same results.
So is it me, my truck, or the starter? Only reason I say me or truck is on occasion the ignition will stick for just a split second in start. I'm very strongly leaning starter, something they are doing in the rebuild/manufacture likely lack of lubrication on the bendix.
O'Reilly says they'll refund me when I bring it back, or of course exchange it again for something different. What does the FTE IDI brain trust suggest? Who's had good experiences with what? I don't mind paying good money for a good starter if it's worth the reliability.
iv never had good luck with reman starters.that said,i run the lifetime warrantied factory Mitsubishi reman from autozone.that one failed inside a year too but least i don't have to buy another one.just change them when they fail.if you have an extension and socket combo that is just the right length, then the top bolt isn't horrible.a bugger, but not horrible.
i was driving though D&D last week and i heard the starter just spin but not engage.hit the key again and she started right up as always and hasn't done it again since...........yet.

when i needed a starter last month, i noticed that oreilly had 3 different levels of quality on the same starter... doesn't sound promising. i'd read about the offset style ones being better, so i set out to get one. i had one in my hand at the napa in kent, but they refused to take my inline-style unit as a core on it, so i ended up with my original style instead. so far i haven't had any trouble with it, but i don't have much history with it to back up that statement. the napa warranty is 3 years or until you lose the invoice.
Next question though, as far as I can tell there are at least four different variations of starters that fit these engines so which is the better design to begin with?
what year are you working on? As far as I know the 3-bolt starters are interchangeable, the ones like the bd I linked to are the best, the crank faster and you can crank longer with them. that's why I'm looking at the bd, even if it lasts a year I can take it in for a core, the napa core charge on those is $110 or go to my local rebuilder and get it fixed

89, yes three bolt so I have a large range to choose from.
I would much rather it lasted more then a year, but I suspect I can find one of that design style local. Good price though at $109, might be worth the hassle.
The current one I can just barely get in there without taking other things apart and the top bolt isn't too much of a hassle, how's the install on this offset gear rdeuction style?
The next question for the FTE IDI experts is if I wanted to look up and find that offset gear reduction ND style starter, what application do I look at?
the DB unit is the same body as the stock style on my 88.
getting the top bolt out was a pain.
but once it was out the new one went rite in, including the top bolt.
