How can you tell how hot it is running? My instrument cluster just has a sweep gauge, no number read out.
The gauge that Ford provides definitely leaves one desiring more fidelity in the information. But from what the Ford Engineer posted, they just recommend running it and if it goes over the 275 degrees a MEL will turn on. So you can either just watch the gauge and back off if the temps start to reach near the top of the gauge or get an OBD II reader like a ScanGauge that will give you a digital readout.
I've used a ScanGauge in the past and really like it, but given the report from the Ford Engineer I'm just going to watch the gauge and back off if it starts to run hot.
Towing a trailer, with my 2012 F150, temps round around 200 +/-. If I'm running along down the highway the temps will be below 200 regardless of the outside temperature. If I get in heavy traffic the temps could jump up around 210. Locking out the higher gears helps in traffic situations & so does allowing the truck to keep rolling. I'll try to keep a good gap between me and the vehicle in-front of me just so I can keep rolling when the traffic stops.
I took my 2008 F150 mudding a few times. The trans temps would get up into the 230 range according to the scan gauge. It never seemed to hurt anything.
Previous guidelines were 230* for up to 30 minutes at a time, and no higher than 250*. Mark doesn't work at Ford anymore, and I haven't heard anything more recent than his knowledge from '07.
These transmissions have a thermostat and will stay around 200* year-round. I've never seen mine get over 210*, but I haven't pulled anything heavier than a 3,500-lb boat. My '13 with the same transmission never went over 225*, and that was pulling a 15,000 lb trailer through the hills.
I like being able to monitor my temps, but inadequate transmission cooling isn't on my list of things to worry about. I've not heard of a 6R80 overheating save for one guy who posted about overheating while rocking the truck free in snow. Must have taken a LOT of rocking!
My '15 Lariat has the Wal-Mart sweep gauges and I'm betting my '16 Lariat I'm picking up next week is the same. It would be nice to see numbers for temp, oil pressure and transmission temp. But at least we get 100 radio stations we'll never listen to.
