Towing Temp's

Hey all,

Just wanted to post my towing temps.

in 80 to 90 degree weather, running about 65 mph.

Tran Temp is 145 without trailer, 200ish (210 was my highest) when towning 7000 lb travel trailer.

EGT's 600 to 700 without trailer, 1100 with travel trailer.

I do sorta wonder about just how hot things get in a stock truck. I can imagine going over 1200 EGT if I took off my mods and would never know it. Seems kinda scary.

Regards
Ray

Numbers look OK.

You could drop those Tranny temps while towing a good 25 degrees with a tranny cooler upgrade.

What altitude are you. Those tranny temps while towing and the egt's both seem a little high to me.

Yeah 1100 is too high for towing, IMO.

Trans temps seem kinda high, you might want to install a cooler like stated earlier. Are your EGTs your max? Because they should fluctuate from 600-1200° depending if you are pulling a grade or not. My EGTs get kinda toasty pulling 10K, but usually only up grades.

I think he meant 1100 max, but I could be wrong (again).

My Stock truck runs 65 on cruise, 450-550 egt empty. Consistent and predictable (still have muffler, Not Cat)

65 mph Pulling 10klbs it runs 700-900 average flat road. It is all over the place more with a load. Occasionally 1000-1100 if heading up an incline.

EGT's seem high to me as well unless he meant max. Tranny is up there too (for my comfort) but for a stock setup, about right.

Mostly runs EGT at about 900 to 1100, there is a lot of up and down hill on I90 in southest Minnesota.

If you really want us to spend your money, a 4" turbo back exhaust may get your EGT's a little lower. However, if you are only tickling 1100 degrees, you are still OK.

You must be pretty close to Lacrosse/Lacresent to be having hills on I90.

Yes, that would be near LaCrosse/LaCresent.

I just made another trip and monitored the temp a little closer. Basically I am running between 900 and 1100. Mostly around 1000.

Thanks for all your replies.

Ray

My numbers are almost exactly the same as Rays are. Never seem to deviate much. Not going to be too concerned myself.

In none of your posts where you mention 1100 degrees egt do you tell us which program you are running. If that is the DP tuner tow program, my experience is that its working well. My 40 tow program, pulling a 13000 lb 5th wheel on cruise control, gets the egt up to about that temperature on grades, and then it kicks the tranny out of OD into 3rd, causing the temp to drop. Its automatic, and protects against excessive egt in case I'm careless and forget to watch the guage. The 60 tow program should do about the same with your lighter trailer.
I agree you should consider another tranny oil cooler. I added a trucool to my 02, which already had an in-radiator cooler plus a oil-to-air cooler in front of the radiator. I put the trucool in series with those two, and have plenty of cooling. The only time I got near 200 was in a city, having just gotten off the highway. The slow speed and stoplights cut down the airflow and made the oil-to-air coolers less effective.
