Interesting trip to the tire shop

Yesterday when checking the truck out before hitching up I found a flat inside dual tire . When the young man pulled my truck around and into the shop he a two other guys were really looking at it, I walked up to the door and he said they have never seen a gas truck set up to pull like mine is. Next question is it a V10, answer no it's a 6.2 V8, puzzled look . Told him it's a great pulling truck

Tire was shot, I ran a small rock through the meaty part of the tread on these cheap OEM General Grabbers, I've had lot of flats over the years but I've never had a rock go through the rubber on a tire, not between the treads but through the center of the tread. The rock was still in there between the belts and inner liner.

That stinks.

Funny you brought the topic of tires up- I just ordered a set of 295/70/18 Toyo Open Country AT-2 tires for mine today. Going a couple sizes up and ditching the stock Continentals that are a 275/65/18. Two are patched and even though I have only 22k on them, they are over 4 years old. Call me weird, but I do not run a tire longer than 5 years, especially pulling my camper and boat. Not worth the chance.

GSSF17, that's not weird, that's being careful and safe

Denny, I had General Grabbers on my 2001 brand-new, and the tread was actually coming off the tire even though they had plenty of meat left.

I was leaving to go camping and checking out the truck and rotating the tires the weekend before, and found a good 2-inch piece of tread just missing. Steel belt totally visible. Glad I did, that could have been bad.

Never again with Generals.

And yes, I was careful to keep them inflated correctly for whatever load I was running. It wasn't a case of "tread separation" like the Explorer fiasco.

I had the same issue with my General Grabbers, the lugs were just falling off in chunks at just over 25,000. I am **** about tire care and there was no reason for this to happen. Junk tires, can't believe Ford would use those things. I went to Nitto Terra's and have been happy since.

I used Firestone Transforce on my work trucks and pulling trucks for years and that's what's going on it when we get home.

I've gone with Cooper, Goodyear, and the latest, Nitto Dura Grapplers and these Nittos are probably the best wearing, best highway traction, handling, etc, tires I've ever owned.

I have the general grabbers and have noticed they really love to get gravel stuck in the tread big time.. like glue.

Follow up- NOPE! Tire shop got the tires in and wanted to charge me a much different price than we agreed upon (and wrote on the order invoice), so guess what? NOPE. They can try to sell those tires to another poor soul. Not me. It is unreal the way some of these places treat their customers. Here I am willing to drop a grand+ in your store and you want to try and screw me with the lights on? Nope.

Anyway, thank God I did not put down a deposit and I was able to walk from this. Buyers Beware! I will post on what tires I choose and be sure to let you guys know how it goes. In the meantime, keep the suggestions/opinions on tire brands/info coming!

Happy motoring!
