Hi I'm new to the forum, and I have been reading posts here for awhile and have had great help with ford trucks. So I decided to join since I just picked up a 01 F250.
So I was towing a fairly light load, probably around 6k. And when I got up to 65 mph my truck made a metal tapping sound, almost similar to a loose exhaust pipe. It went away at around 68mph. So I pulled over and checked everything and all seems fine. When I left for work today it did not make the sound at all, without the trailer. The rear end does have some hum to it, so I'm thinking it may be a bearing or u joint. I did service the differential fluid a month ago. What do you guys think? Anyone have a similar issue? My truck is an 2001 F250 5.4l 4x4 with 4.10 gears.
I checked the exhaust and all seems good, i also checked the u-joints and they are fine. Today while towing it made that latte, metal tapping sound at 65-70 mph and went away. When i got home i could smell gear lube from the left rear wheel, there was no signs of leaking but I'm pretty sure I'm just going to replace the bearing and inspect the parts for damage.
The truck has a straight pipe, no muffler. Haha I wish it was that, this issue is driving me nuts, like I said I smell gear lube from the left rear wheel. But the differential I don't losing any fluid, and it hums with a slight vibration, so I'm thinking it's the bearing. When I hit a bump today at around 67 mph it made that sound again, the truck was unloaded.
