Thought maybe it was Ujoints, but they appear to be reasonable tight. When starting off I have no issues...no noises...no vibrations. While driving and under power...nothing...
When coasting...I have a slight vibration and what sounds like 15 bb's tumbling around in a coffee can. It has that real thin metal sound. I wrote the Ujoints off, but I suppose if they were worn to an unusual shape now that the bearing are shot that maybe the noise could be resonating up throught the driveshaft, which is thin.
I pulled brakes today to see if there was anything in my drums and came up with nothing..
The sound is definitely rotationally effected.
Im completely stumped. I threw the truck in neutral and applied the ebrake. I got about 2 inches of rotational travel out of the shaft. I didn't get any up and down play at the joints to speak of. When rotating...it rotated within the tranny and rear diff. IT DID NOT rotate at the joints.
I also wanted to add. Speed is not an issue. I have a driveway with a wall on both sides and can hear the SLOW rattle even at 2mph when I pull down my driveway
Any ideas.

Reason: becasue...
This may sound dumb, however based on an Old trick from years past, but do you have some type of hub cap on the wheels and if so have you checked them to be sure someone has not put gravel in them.
I had a similar noise in my 06' that sounded to me like a loose clamp on an exhaust pipe. I was all over that thing looking for a loose bracket, strap, clamp or other type of metal to metal rattle. On the second dealership trip they noticed a TSB for a relay that either actuates or disconnects the 4 wheel drive. I believe it's vacuum controlled. I don't know if it covers the 98's or what years for that matter
If we can get Tylus to weigh in he knows the name of the relay and it's function.
I did have the wheel caps off today to check the brakes. They are plastic and and I didn't notice anything inside of them when I took them off.
Jcee.
The sound I am getting only occurs when I am moving and coasting. I would think if it's electronic it would occur when that system is intiated. Not just when at a coast.
When I go slow or fast at a coast the sound is in sync with the speed I am traveling.
If you took a coffee can and turned it sideways and threw 15 BB's in it and spun it like a rock tumbler...that is the sound I am getting. I can't imagine any electronic device sounding like that. It's loud enough to echo off jersey barriers and walls when I drive by them.
I didn't mention anything being electronic. This was a VACUUM actuated relay that was the problem in mine. It also varied in noise level related to speed. The relay itself did not seal and would not hold the vacuum according to the tech at the dealership causing a rapid open/close condition hence the rattle.
Mine sounded more from the right front. You could hear it on the open road but when there were barriers or another vehicle passed me it sounded like it was comin' apart! I did not hear the rattle when coasting. Is yours more from the rear of the truck?
I replaced both front and rear Ujoints cause that's the only thing IMO left that it could be.
The front Joint on the rear driveshaft was perfect. The back one was shot.
I replaced both and have no issues at this time. No sounds....nothing.
Never in all the trucks I have owned have I ever had a driveshaft make this kind of sound. Like I said in my original post, best I can figure is the back joint in the got sloppy and resonated up throught the driveshaft.
It's hard to believe a noise like that could come from a U joint that didn't vibrate at some speed or coasting. Every U I ever replaced either vibrated under power and clunked on take off or just plain fell out (there's an experience! ).
Come to think about I did have a CV joint make a squeel/squeak when it rotated. The ball between the joints was the culprit there. Glad you found it.
I hate to spout an old cliche but....It's always the last place you look!

Reason: mispelling
Yeah Jcee...I never figured it either. At least it wasn't expensive. LOL.
I can say this. The front joint was fine.
Back joint.....
Follow me here for a second. A Ujoints have 4 pins and caps.
2 pins were fine with grease. Both opposite of one another.
1 pin was dry, but still had the needle bearings in it.
The last pin across from that dry one was demolished.
Best I can figure is in a coast the one dry pin with no bearings was slapiing around inside the cap everytime it spun around.
Whether or not it's the case, I don't know....It's fixed though. Thats all I care about. Now...onto the manifolds....Grrrr....
