I have an 04 F250 6.0 with about 12K miles. This weekend out in the middle of nowhere, I happen to be going up a rather steep incline about 45 and heard a loud scraping sound which sounded like it was coming from the drivers side wheelwell. Thinking maybe I had run over something, I got out and looked and saw nothing. A little later, the truck did it again. The next day on the way home, it happen 4 different times and the noise got worse each time. EAch time, it was about 45mph, under load, going up a steep hill. You could feel it in the steering wheel. it is a frightening sound when you are out somewhere where there is no cell coverage. Has anyone else experienced this?
My truck has had the latest flash and thus far, I'm sorry that I ever had that done. It's noiser, gas mileage is down, etc.
jack her up, check the wheel bearing. for some reason, some people lose a wheel bearing in a few hundred miles, some get lucky enough to make it 30k ( thatid be me).... one thing is for certain, we will all replace em sooner or later.
No, the drift boat was at home so that's not it. I was onroad, going up a section of the Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy outside of Cooke City, MT so it's steep.
It's not a metal on metal screeching sound. I wasn't on the brakes so it's not that, just a very loud scraping type sound and when it starts, the truck starts riding a bit rough and you can feel it in the steering wheel. My first thought was rubber coming off of a tire as the first time, it almost sounded like that. That's not the case. It only lasts 20-30 seconds. It almost sounds like something hitting inside the wheel well or hitting the bottom of the truck. The last time it made the noise, the truck had not downshifted, I had applied a little gas and I don't think I was into the turbo. I have an appt. Wed to take it in so we'll see what they come up with
Had the same problem with my truck. I thought it was my big tires rubbing the inner fender. It turned out to be a problem with the VGT sensor and actuator. The vanes of the turbo were staying closed or more closed than they should be and it was causing the turbo to overboost. Since the 6.0L doesn't have a boost pop off valve, it blows it out the intake. That is why it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side wheel well.
thanks Max, that makes sense. I'll hit the dealer with that one on Wed morning when the truck goes it. This is a great forum. I appreciate everyone's responses.
I got the same type of noise under load / pulling my 5th wheel. When getting on the ramp to the highway I accelerate and here a scraping, grinding, metal type noise from the driver side front. Let off the accelerator and it stops, push down and there it is. Only does it upon acceleration onto the on ramps. Scares the hell out of you that something is ready to break. Ask dealer about it and of course they could not find anything wrong. It did it again last weekend so I purposely kept on the accelator until it stopped. Nothing broke but still makes you think something is not right.

I have the same problem. Great description of it too! Please, Maxrsmart, let us know if there is a fix. VGT Sensor replaced? Actuator replacement? Thanks!

I will have to look at the service invoice again, but they told me the actuator failed and the vanes of the turbo were closed. Mine was so bad that the truck could not go over 35MPH unloaded. The turbo would spool up really fast and build boost, but there was no where for the exhaust to go because the vanes were closed. So the exhaust and the boost were fighting each other. By the time the RPM's got up to about 2000, it was blowing off pressure through the intake. It is fixed now and I havn't had a problem since.
I have the same problem. Sounds like fender moulding rubbing against the tire but isn't. The sound appears only when I abruptly come off the throttle while pulling a load under acceleration or climbing a hill. I took it into the dealer and the tech explained that it was excess boost being vented through the intake system. They said that a service letter had been issued to dealers explaining that it was a normal sound. If someone has a fix for the noise, let me know.
No fix for it yet. It is referred to as turbo bark, burp or fart. No waste gate on these so that extra pressure has to go somewhere.
These bakrs, burps farts..whatever you want to call them...I will refer to them as "gaseous anomalies" from now on... Have to mess with the MAF sensor if the air is actually passing through backwards...
I bet you could install a blow-off valve in the MAF tube, on the turbo side of the sensor, and set the valve for around 1 psi (or as low as you could set it). This would not neccessarily silence the noise, but it might change its tone a little bit (I like the sound of a blow-off valve, its noise makes me think of Choctaw in an oil war )
Well, the truck went in for it's appt. this morning and they replaced the EGR Valve. They seemed to think that was the problem. It seems they had replaced the VGT Solenoid last week when the truck was having a different problem. I'm sure the next time I'm out in the middle of Wyoming out of cell phone range and start up a really steep mtn., I'll find out whether they fixed it or not. No cell phone service, no 1-800 Ford come get me. thanks for all your replies.
