...ill bet you end up with air in the cooling system seeing as you're burning coolant
Where did I miss this? I've read the thread a few times with tired eyes and can't find it.
Which HF kit are you using and which adapter in the kit? The one shared by Pirsch Fire Wagon is not the ideal unit. The really long adapter that looks like a glow plug without a tip is the one most likely to seal. Let me show you what happens when the base of the adapter doesn't seal - like this glow plug on a running engine:
The "base" is not closest to the nut part of the glow plug - it's deep in the hole. This is where the mating surface is for sealing the compression. Getting a good seal with the HF kit is a bugger, but it's doable. Maybe you could get some PlastiDip and make a soft face on the adapter, or maybe the goop could get stuck in there - I don't know if it would or if it would harm anything if it did.
One other thing... make sure your injector bolts have at least 100 INCH/pounds of torque on them to hold air - spec is 120 in/lbs.
If you are really going to give up on the motor, depending on the outcome of the compression test - maybe it's worth the extra money for a better tester to be sure. My OTC adapter spins right in and seals finger tight - but it doesn't work with the HF connector.
By dusted I mean both factory air hoses were cracked on the underside and engine was ran in sandy area and it might have ingested debris. Compressor wheel is tight but some coating is missing along the edges.
I like that OTC adapter, gonna buy one and do this right. I own 3 99+ 7.3 trucks (two 4x4 Excursions and 4x4 F250), will need it going forward.
Since it runs, I was gonna pass on the project to someone else, not setup for engine pull in the driveway at this time I found complete motor for 700 supposedly good, but you know how that goes
I got this truck without hearing it running, and could not check for blowby. Paid 2700 tho, so I took a chance. 99 4x4 7.3 CC SWB 300k clean FL title.

You'll need to buy a different fitting for your gauge to make that adapter work. I bought the OTC gauge, and it was pretty expensive just to get a bunch of attainable parts in an assembly. I don't know what that fitting is called, but getting the glow plug adapter and that fitting for your gauge is all you should need. Oh... my OTC gauge has every part connection sealed, so I'd say it's far less likely to leak than the HF.
