For about 5 years now I've had an idle that seems to "hunt". It is minimal, but I've gotten to the point that it bothers me now. The tach barely moves, so it's more about what I hear than what I see. Any ideas on what it could be? It's a 2003 with around 150,000 miles.
No, it does it at idle with no other conditions. Also a vibration at idle (that developed about a year ago) and changes when I step on the brake pedal. It gets a little more pronounced the harder I step on the brake. These two issues are not related.
Idle can hunt around due to variations in ICP (Idle Control Pressure), so it could be the IPR (Idle Pressure Regulator) valve being a little sticky/going bad, the Tinnerman nut on the back of the IPR being a little loose,or the ICP sensor going bad. Is your truck stock, or do you have a tuner?
my '97 has had an idle hunt for 240,000 miles that I have owned it. in that time I have changed, IPR, IPC HPOP, Injectors, Engine and IDM and it still hunts.
When I changed the IPR (at about 100,000 miles)I found the tin nut about 1/4 inch deep in dirt in the valley, looked like it fell off when new. close to 80,000 miles with out it.
Not sure what would be the cause now. I would check the intake boots for leaks. If you search for leak detector there are write-ups on how to build one, it could be that, or it may just be something particular to your truck. A "tolerance stack up" of a few things that are constant on your particular truck that could all conspire to make the idle hunt around a little. I know that low ICP can cause the idle to hunt for sure.

Ok, thanks for the help. It's probably something that's just normal for my truck, but it's no big deal. It runs great, so I'll just deal with it.
