Lightbulb Synthetic oil

Hey everyone, sorry about the double post, I'm just not to into the whole truck world yet, never had someone to teach me this stuff...

Any way here I go again, so I got my trucks oil changed at 80,000 miles.Used synthetic oil, Motorcraft and Motorcraft filter. Just today I decided to clean my truck and crawl underneath it just for the hell of it. So I eventually checked my oil and it showed on the dip stick that I was low. And when I say low I mean it was at the tip of he dip stick. So ofcourse I went to go buy some oil and filled it to where it should be. But here is my concern. Wher the he'll did it go? I've always checked for leaks or spots underneath my truck in the past and I've never seen leaks. And I know I'm not burning oil because I know th smell and the smoke from my previous car.

But note. I'm at 89,056 miles. And it says my next oil change is due at 89,700 miles.

Someone please help me out. Sorry again about the double post.

Well, you say you " got my oil changed". Maybe the pit jockey didn't fully fill it. It shouldn't be burning oil at that mileage.

you have 9000 miles on the oil ? It would not be uncommon to burn a 1/2 to 1 quart per 5000 miles and not know it... It does not smoke or smell at 1 quart usage for 5000 miles. If you are going to run 10,000 miles between oil changes you should check the level every 2-3000 miles.

You went 9000 miles without checking the oil? Not too good a policy. I consider an engine that uses a quart every 3k miles or more or so to be just fine. So the only problem I see here is your lack of maintenance. I'm sure your owner's manual says to check the oil every gas fillup, or maybe every 1000 miles. Do it, add oil if needed. If you run the oil down, it will prematurely wear the insides of the engine and it will use more oil. Vicious cycle.

Good luck,
George

Damn. Yeah guys I screwed up this time I didn't know it burns that much over time and mileage so I think I'm going to change it fully every 4,000 miles but just make sure to check on it from time to time and add some as needed until I hit 4,000

You can change it at 6000 or 7500 especially if you are using full synthetic oil, but check it at least every 1000 miles. (I like Motorcraft syn blend just fine and would run that 5-6k between changes.) Having to add oil is not unique to car or truck ownership. Keep a spare quart of oil in your truck. If you had an oil burner that sucked down a quart every 1000 miles, you would be replenishing the oil additives continuously and there would be less need to change it often.

My first car (a '65 Sunbeam Alpine that I bought in 1970) used a quart of oil every 300 miles for the 2 years I drove it. I checked it every 2 days or so... Even the million mile van guy went 1.3 million miles in his Ford van and had to add a quart every 1000 miles. millionmilevan.com

A friend of mine at work many years ago had a daughter and son in law who got married in the 1980's and bought a new Chevy van. They proceeded to drive it for 10000 miles without opening the hood. Then they had to call a tow truck because the engine ran dry and froze up. Pretty expensive...
