Burning Oil?

I find myself every 2 weeks having to put atleast a quart of oil in my truck. The exhaust isnt blowing any smoke. And When I put oil in it it is 5w-20 motorcraft synthetic. Any Ideas? THANKS!

How many miles are you going between quarts?

Remember, catalytic converters can actually hide some mild oil burning symptoms.

Also, could it be leaking oil instead of burning it? There are oils that make your gaskets swell a little (oil for high mileage vehicles) to cure leaks.

You may consider switching to a conventional oil to see if the oil consumption doesn't decrease. It might help.

How long have you been using synthetic? Sometimes these Triton engines don't like to go from dino to syn with a bunch of miles already on them.

I'm not sure. I bought it and it had synthetic in it. I have owned it for 3 months so.

1) How many miles?

2) Switch to dino.

3) If not enough of an improvement, consider one of those engine additives for sealing oil leaks, for diagnostic purposes. If consumption does not improve, then you know this is going to cost you money.

I bet it stops...or at least slows considerably with dino...since there's no smoke or detectable leaks.

I would just change to dino and try that first. I do not like the idea of adding a conditioner or additive to the oil unless you have to. Save that as a last resort. Go to 10w-30 if you have to. These Triton have some tight tolarences, any stop leak additive may also stop it from oiling itself properlly? If you got the truck used it may be that you found out why he sold it!

dont say that crap. becuase if it is burning oil in that way and I can't stop it. im gonna sell it. its a good truck but im not gonna deal with those problems. i'll waste some money with the manifolds and ball joints because I can do that stuff myself. o well i hope this stuff works.

Does motorcraft make a Full sythetic. I have only seen a sythetic blend in Motorcraft 5w 20. These engines have been known to go thruogh oil. Some not all will have this. My 03 V10 which has only had 5w 20 motorcraft synblend since day one has gone through a quart every 1500 miles. The truck just turned 80K miles and it is a quart every 1000 miles. Fords spec for oil useage is more than them. If I am not mistaken it is something like a quart every 500 miles.

My 5.4L has over 220,000 miles on it and is finally wearing out, but it has never needed oil added between changes. That is even with a change or three being streched out to 15,000+ miles with dino. I just didn't pay attention and run it long. Never added a drop.
