OIl consumption

Gentlmen,

I just bought this truck it is, 1999, F350 SD . Just noticed it is using oil. dont know the history of it oil changes or usage, it has 300000 miles , with 5.4 L engine. Just changed the plugs.
Need a recommendation, on what oil to use , of ocurse with this high mileage we expect to use oil, it is a work truck with utilty bed.
it appear to be in good condition , transmmission shift no fluid leaks , no engine oil leaks. Just drove it 500 mile to bring it home.
it will be used around town
Thank you

Welcome to FTE. It might be helpful if you let us know how much oil it is using over a certain number of miles.

Agreed, how much oil is consumed? With 300000K miles some IS to be expected. My V10 since new has used 1 quart /3000 miles. I have always run 5/20 syn blend. I did run a synthetic for a very short period of time and notice oil consumption INCREASED with a full synthetic so I stayed with the motorcraft 5/20

Thank you guys for responding,

The question how much oil?
to be honest not sure , I know when we picked thwe truck after we bought it , it was low on oil about qrt.
filled up and drove it home to alabama 500 miles
To day I noticed at Orelly to buy oil that it was way low about 2 qrts

I want to change the oil andf filter soon so I can have a baseline to go by and only then I will know how oil it uses between changes
I bought Valvoline Synth Blend 10 W 40 for engine over 75000 mile

Thank you
again

All that Valvoline stuff does is make your gaskets swell a little, which helps seal leaks.

sounds to me like you have your ans, 2 qts every 500 miles, that is a little much. Might be time for a valve job at least.

I've read that Jasper makes reliable remanufactured engines and transmissions. Here is the link:

Gas Engines: JASPER

I have that Jasper is good too. I think you will want to look at a full block as the motor you are going to replace is going to be pretty much wore out everywhere.

They do great engines. Their transmissions are so-so. I know a lot of people who have had issues. My neighbor used to have a '94 Ranger auto. He used jasper transmissions, ended up replacing it every 40,000 miles or so. Just could stand up to towing. Now true he didn't know how to get the most out of the A4LD, but come on. That why I have had my transmissions rebuilt locally by a shop that knows what they are doing.

Considering the oil consumption in the engine, I recommend checking your plugs. Also, I recommend taking your truck to Autozone to determine if there are any codes from the PCM. Knowing the codes will help narrow down the issue.

I started yesterday with changing the oil , I went through the process:
1-added diesel to the existing oil , running for 15 min
2- drain it and rain the filter and put part diesel and part oil and run it for 15 min
3- drain that and change the filter and oilput in new oil Valv syn blend with 1/2 qrt of lucas oil.
I did not get any sludge or residue, but it was dirty. the second change was really dirty.
when I put the new oil it was so clean could not hardly read the stick
This gives me a basis for oil consumption. I can mark the mileage and time

As far as the plugs I already changed all the plugs , they were wore out but didnt notice any build up on any of them

what color were the plugs and did you line them up so that you could see any wear between cylinders?

The Plugs were pretty much all worn ouit evenly with pink brown color .
Furian, Good news , This morning Took your advise , the guys at Auto zone were helpfull , they read the code it Po305 that suggested no five was miss firing . Immediatly tyhey gave new COP and changed on the spot andf Boom it worked immediatly the miss was gone I drove few miles , it really handled good specially at Overdrive it was smooth.

Again thank you for the help , I will watch and report on the oil consumption. Now I will clean the IAC Obvuiously it was not cared for or serviced well giving the Oil color.

Thnk you for thew support
