First let me start by saying i love my 390. that being said the cummins is just more logical for my purposes.
So I got to thinking today is the speedo drive on a 74 highboy out of the transfer case(if it is question answered) or the transmission? the reason this matters to me is I'd like to use my original gauges.
and the next question is will my dana 44 live(at least for a while) with a cummins? I just put a **** ton of money into a 76 d44 so i can have disc brakes and then i went and decided to cummins it, my axle has brand new 4340 axles inner and outer with the 760x ujoints and brand new bearings and seals throughout it also has brand new spindles and ball joints basically the only things not new are the housing, gears/ carrier, hubs, knuckles, brake brackets and cailipers.
keep in mind that this isn't destined to be a power monster, at first it'd be mostly stock while i save the pennies again for more goodies.
the engine trans I'm looking at are from a 1994 donor dodge 2wd with a nv4500.
any input is appreciated, I'm hoping the 44 will do me for a while atleast.
I wouldn't worry about the d44 being capable or not. It sounds like you built it pretty good and these engines really wont put that much more strain on the chassis anyway. You`re only gonna be adding a few more hundred pounds. Maybe upgrade later if/when you go to big power and do some sled pulling/off roading.
woohoo this is mostly going to be an everyday truck towing, camping, hunting. i was concerned about the carrier and gears more than anything. i was already planning on new drivelines and yokes throughout(I'm suspect of the strength of the baby ujoints used from the factory). as for power i'm doubtful I'll ever go much more than about 400hp from the cummins, i need reliability more than racecar speed. also would i be able to get by with my existing 4.10s for now? i plan on running 35s if that helps at all.
also yeah all the parts i replaced in my 44 were the best ones i could get from yukon, requirement do to having a 76 axle damn oddball parts 10.66 inch outer stubs and 2 year specific spindles grrr. either way it stronger stuff than the factory ever thought of( even the ball joint cups are chromoly i believe)

Reason: forgot some info
The low end torque and 4.10 gears will work good. That's what I`m gonna run with my build and 37" tires. It comes out about the same as the Dodges final drive with smaller tires and 3.54 gears.
You`ll definitely need to upgrade the drive shafts for the 400hp, but for just throwing it in and running at stock levels you should be fine.
Any idea what your gonna be doing for the engine mounts?
i'm thinking about the mount kit from diesel conversion( i think thats the place/name anywho) they are suposed to go to an existing hole in the frame that you drill out for a larger bolt, either that or i'll build my own. i was thinking about using the stock dodge mounts but decided against that. what are your thought on boxing the frame? needed or not?

I would recommend against the Conversion Specialists mounts if that's who you mean. Those are the ones I used, and well, if I were you I'd go with the factory Dodge mounts.

Your D44 will be just fine. You are only adding a few 100 lbs so it would be like you had 3 people in the cab driving around.
The 4:10 gears and 35's will be fine. I am running 4:10's with 37s now but when my restomod is complete I plan on 35s. I would go ahead and get some 4k governor springs and 60lb valve springs and you can get a lot more useful rpms out of the Cummins for about $300.
I used the stock 2nd gen motor mounts, cut my factory ones flush with the frame and used it as a building point to make frame mounts.
As far as a gauge pod, I thought about a lot of different options and I settled for making a 3 set gauge pod for on the steering column. Works out great. Use some 2" pipe and the little gauges that go in pillar pods fit perfectly. It also hardly obscures anything on the dash and is easily viewable. I am going to put pyrometer, boost, and tach in the pods. There are pictures of some of my fab work in this post. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ar-guages.html
are those the ones you were meaning?
what kind of issues did you have?
Those are the ones. First, the design is going to provide you with a much harsher ride than the massive isolaters on the factory units. Next thing is that the quality control is poor. The mounts they sent me did not reach the holes in the frame, and I had to make about a 5/16 spacer, but they were way too long to just be the wrong ones (i.e. highboy mounts). Then they set the motor so far back that you will essentially have to fabricate a new firewall. All this made worse due to their strict no return policy. I guess on the upside, I've got plenty of space up front and better weight distribution I wanted a set of Chasetruck754's mounts, but he only makes them for highboys (lucky you). I should have just made them myself.
Either way, if you're moving ahead with this project, I did the same thing ('94 motor, NV4500). Feel free to steal some of my ideas (link below), and do NOT miss out on co425's build thread!
i have this funny feeling i'm going to be spending a lot of time here
any idea if i can make the cummins talk to my existing tach?
also thank you for the info on those conversion mounts, so much for that idea lol

Thank you. I'll be dipped if in the 2days this thread has been up I haven't learned more about this swap than 2 months of research on my own. I guess good info is found on internet forums from time to time who knew lol.
Also what are you guys doing for air intakes? Factory dodge or something else?
