Common Rust spots on Excursion

'05 V10 XLT Mint w 76k miles, mostly kept in FL as tow / family vehicle. Over the last year started to develop some rust spots under doors-- running board area, and now a spot around trim on passenger side door very small. Are these common spots? where else should I look? I notice alot of factory running boards are replaced on most trucks I see out there.

Yes, many of the factory running boards suffer from rusted out metal support braces under them. The rocker panels, specifically at the bottom of them where the rocker and floor pan meet and the bottom edge of the doors are
Retry common rust areas on these wagon. Another serious but less common area is around the front windshield sealing surfaces, rust perforation here can lead to rain water getting on/in the GEM module and that can kill the GEM, and cause all sorts of electronics problems.

^^^ Very accurate... ^^^

FL may not have salt on the roads but there is plenty in the sand and in the water.

I am getting ready to tackle a few rust issues at bottom of doors, running boards, just behind the front wheel wells and behind the brake turn signals. Planning on removing the bumpers (aftermarkets that are getting a little rusty and repair winch) remove running boards and the rubber around the doors then deal with rust.

I'm certain the PO of my Ex put aftermarket running boards on it because the original steel reinforcements rusted out. I've also had a mechanic comment on how nice my bumpers are. Apparently its fairly common in the rust belt (where I live) to have the original bumpers rust through where the salty slush gets kicked up off of the tires.

I think it stands for General Electrocs Module or something similar, it's basically the black box brain that handles nearly everything electronic in the EX except the engine and trans.

But the frequent daily monsoon-like downpours do a great job of rinsing things.

Another rust area I see on northern Excursions is if you open the back doors and look just below the sill plates towards the rear. They like to rust there for some reason.

For me it was the bottom of the front doors. then I found the LR rocker by the LR door rusting out. they have small drain holes, so they get plugged up and hold dirt and moisture which starts the rusting process. I removed my rocker and cleaned out all the debris and sealed it up with POR 15. I also cut small windows in the bottom of the rockers to keep air flowing through to help keep it dry. the cross braces underneath can also rot out due to the same issue. I also noticed that some of the trucks will start rotting at the very front of the inner rocker. best thing to do is get underneath and start crawling around and look in all the small nooks and crannies.

I cant get back to my original user name, password needs to be reset-- no admin yet. BUT yes its in FL, but its in the last year that the spots have really developed, nothing has changed since 08, truck just getting older i guess. Ill get it knocked out in the next 30 days, I have seen some nice running boards from Lund when the OEM come off. Time to leave it in NJ. Thanks

ithaca, did you ever resolve your problems? I have almost exactly the same issues with my 05 in TX.
