I own a 2011 lariat with 500 miles. We have had several days of rain and I am getting alot of rust spots on my driveway always below and inside the right front tire. None in the rear or left front. Dealer said not to worry about it after they looke at the area. They said it is the new metal forming surface rust. There is a skid plate which seems to cover wherever the rust is starting. Should I be a Pain and continue to complain. Should I demand that area be undercoated.
The underside of most trucks, including suspension parts, springs, driveshafts, etc. will develop a coating of surface rust which will not hurt anything unless your brake lines start rotting away or something.
Undercoating can be decent stuff, but the problem is that it can also peel off the surface that it's supposed to stick on to and allow water (or salt water in Michigan) to be trapped underneath and kill the part faster. My '78 F100 had these super thick steel rear fenders (Flareside) that were undercoated, and they never would have rusted except the factory undercoated them heavily and they trapped salt water and rusted. I'm sure the undercoating was partially to keep the noise from rocks down but I would have preferred it had never been applied.
Short answer: don't sweat it. Some architects design bare steel buildings that get a rust patina on them and last for generations.
I might add that living in an area that is exposed to salt water the rust will form at a more rapid pace but not the point where you have to worry about something falling off. You will just notice unprotected parts that are not painted will develop surface rust a little more quickly. Areas that use salt on the roads in the winter time, vehicles will rust even quicker.
If I lived in one of those areas I would be more likely to have a new vehicle under-coated immediately after delivery. Which is what I did when I lived in Michigan. Car washes are as busy in the winter as they are in the summer for that very reason.
