Finally it begins.
Finally it begins.
Hello
A little about me.
45yr old carpenter though not a mechanic iv'e been described by friends as having gears growing out the side of my head.(rebuilt a few vehicles in the past) I understand the resto process, confident I can tackle most of the work and willing to source out the rest. I intend to get as close to original as possible with the help of my 2 boys and my father. But enough about me.
The truck
61yr old Mercury 100 (1955) originally my great grandfathers and the truck my father learned to drive in. 23 years ago I rescued this truck from a field on the family farm in Manitoba, abandoned where it had broken down decades earlier and left to rot. Sunk in mud up to the frame. Some time was spent just to make it a rolling chassis again and the motor was rebuilt. Then life put the project on hold and it sat in storage for the last 20yrs.... Till now.
Full frame off restoration begins. Though as stated I am comfortable with the work involved this will be my first hands on with a truck this old.
Any and all tips and possible sources of parts/material will be greatly appreciated. I will use this forum to track progress and provide updates. The plan is to work it every Sunday (at a minimum) with my father and my boys.

Welcome to the forum. There are a few Mercury truck owners who frequent the forum.
Nice history of the truck, that it has been in the family and all documented. This does bring up the question of ownership. I am not versed in Canadian vehicle titling but make sure you have ownership, all paperwork in your name before doing much to the truck.
Again, welcome to the forum.

Thank you and I will check the date. Was drawing off 20yr old memory.. so I'll have to confirm the year. My father does have all the paper dating back to original purchase and farm truck registration.
Nice truck. It's great to see a family truck being restored.
It has a 55 grill though.
You wouldn't happen to have the VIN (serial number back in those days) We could decode it for you.
What engine does it have in it?
Here are some vendors that will have about everything you need:
MidFifty, Dennis Carpenter, Mac's Auto, LMC Truck. I'm sure there are a few more.
Be sure to get a catalog from these vendors, they are a great resource.
Also, you need to purchase this:
1948-56 Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog CD - HiPo Parts Garage
It's only $22 and especially since you are staying stock, the pictures are worth their weight in gold.
We like lots of pictures so keep them coming.

That's a great starting point, I'm a backyard mechanic at best and I have restored 3 trucks and am starting on my 4th ,just remember it's a hobbie and supposed to be enjoyable! Even if you tinker a couple of hours a week.
